Gearbox Oil Change Time

Postby dursleyman » 24 Nov 2011 16:13

I have been planning to change the oil in my 5 speed gearbox to GM Synchromesh for some time so with winter approaching now has to be the best time.
Question is, I recall seeing something suggested about a way of letting the oil out with the engine ticking over so it pumps out all the muck but I cannot find the post again.
Any thoughts or suggestions for making an oil change easier ?
Its a normal TR7 with the LT77 box.

Best way to drain the oil is drive the car as long as it is needed to get the gearbox oil on working temperature, than drain it.
Due the the temperature, the oil is thinner, so flows out more easily.

Don't let the engine idle when you drain the oil, as the oil pump will be running dry.

Russ, you may be thinking of the method that Ramon Alban has on his website, and has been mentioned on this forum, for cleaning out the LT77 box on his SD1V8.

As Beans says, don't let it run without oil in it!
