If you are really serious, get a bell housing from Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide, to fit a Toyota Supra box, & know it will be strong enough.

For any motorsport you wil need a fully reconditioned gearbox including new bearings. Anything secondhand, or worn will let you down. The box from the SD1 with the larger drain plug has slightly bigger bearings, but T5 and Toyota boxes are very popular these days.

Gear box identification,

The identification marks can be found on an oval lug near the base of the box

G16A SD1 2000 (Could be 4 speed)

G17A SD1 2300/2600 5 speed

G19A SD1 3500 SE/VP 5 speed

G22A SD1 3500 Police spec 5 speed

G23A SD1 2600 Police spec 5 speed

G26A SD1 2400 Diesel 5 speed

G27A SD1 2000 Later model 5 speed

G28A SD1 Vitesse 5 speed

G30A Sherpa Range

For hard use my learned friends Odd and Chunk have the correct idea, but running a late LT77 behind my 4.6

According to Jon Wolfe the original TR7 5 speed 'box is up to the job if you are developing around 300 BHP from your engine.

Both John Buffum and Bob Tullius used the LT77 gear box with the road racer developing 360 hp I believe and for longer endurance events it was detuned to 300 to 330 hp range. They didn't use the 5th gear (overdrive) considering it the weak point of the transmission. Mind you the Toyota transmission might be better shifting and last longer, don't know.
