The Zenith Stromberg Carburetor Saga, (again)

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

problem solved, [:D] valves are now set correctly and she purrs. BUT, being that I'm at 6700 feet above sea level, she is running rich even after adjustment, Question where can I get thicker main jet / needles for this altitude to weaken the mixture. I am in Colorado USA.

Cheers

Hi, my name is Caleb. My Aunt went to town and left the computer wide open for me to visit this site.

For high altitudes you'll have to ask your authorized Triumph dealer for the special high altiude Z-S metering needles along with the special left handed monkey wrench for this delicate installation. Then, using the dealer only spectro analyzer, the approved emissions settings can be achieved.

Mind you, ONLY an authorized Triumph dealer is actually allowed to perform this repair operation. I hope you still have one near you as most are long gone and their tools and equipment ground up at the metals recycling yards to be recast as Chinese Teflon coated cooking skillets sold at Walmart.

If you cannot have this done, you may be forced to move to a lower altitude where the air is denser and your emissions won't be overly rich. May I suggest the mosquito infested, hot & humid Southeast Texas Gulf coast? I've heard some folks who don't like snowy mountains prefer it there.

A couple of ZS tips I just picked up on and thought I'd share. I have a TR6 that was brought into my shop from another repair facility after they couldn't get it to run properly. They have done a valve job, replaced the timing set and put kits in the carbs. It would barely run and is fouling plugs. I pulled the carbs figuring they knew not what they were doing and the float levels were off. A shake of the floats indicated the plastic is leaking and they were half full of fuel. New ones are on order. I understand this to be a rather common occurance with the plastic floats so may be worth a look if experiancing rich mixture or flooding.

A friend, that is quite the wiz with these sidedraft carbs, offered a couple of other recomendations.
1 Block the idle air bypass off as any problems with the diaphram will cause irratic idle.
2 Turn the trimming screw all the way in for same reason
3 Disconect and plug the vacuum retard at the dizzy and the port on the bypass valve (not sure if this retard was used on the TR7 & 8)

These mods may not be Smog legal but he assures me it makes setting idle and mixture much simpler. These devices were used to get emissions acceptable at idle speed only by leaning the mixture and retarding the timing. The car I'm working on has Antique registration and is Smog exempt.

Hi,
No plans on moving to TX[;)], I’m staying up high where the air is cleaner ( did not say clean). My TR7 is smoged exempt, and has no smog crap on it. Both carbs check out great, C02 meter is reading high, but the plugs are golden brown no fouling, slow pick up when “blippingâ€￾ the throttle, over 2k pick up is great. however the exhaust fumes burn your eyes when driving with the window open ( have no AC, and it gets hot here in CO, so no funny comments).
You can smell its running rich, would love to lean it out.

Cheers
