SU dashpots should be filled with engine oil (normal 20/50). This is more viscous and slows/damps the movement of the piston. This is recommended in the manual.

Most likely an Ambassador cap, they are often used by the Dolomite boys and are sold as an option to give a side entry plug-in type cap but they are higher than the usual Sprint cap. They have two screws to attach them normally but you can take the screws out and the usual spring clips will work. They often get supplied with a red rotor arm as part of the "conversion kit" for a Sprint.

So the Ambassador cap theory sounds reasonable. I'll look for a replacement like for like and see what happens - or are they interchangeable?

I had a Lumenition system on the 7, which took about 4 years to die.

I would get a slight hesitancy in acceleration from low revs for the first 4 or 5 kilometres from cold, after which it would clean up. Each time this appeared I would clean everything in the ignition & fuel systems, & the problem would disappear for 6 or 12 months, only to reappear.

It was never testable by the time I got to the auto electrician in town, 26 kilometres away. At it's last appearance it got bad enough to actually cut the engine for a second or so, long enough to drop the rev counter to near zero, pinpointing the problem.

I finally found a mobile sparky who came & tested it cold, declared it was the Lumenition module, supplied & fitted a new system. That was about 6 years ago. No further problem, & I think a little more power.

Have a look at the distributor body for the part number, it looks like a Sprint one which is a Lucas 44D4. If yes you can use a Sprint cap (like the smaller one in my pictures) but you will need new leads and the Sprint rotor arm to match. Also fits on a 45D distributor. Probably easiest to get a new Ambassador cap and rotor and start with that.
