No, all stock with pressure sprayer. Haven't had a chance to do back end yet, a project for another winter. Got poly for replacement and would like to put a POR-15 refinishing kit to the gas tank as FI tanks are a little hard to get here. Not to mention 50 lb. lines to the pump as I haven't replaced them yet (for peace of mind.)

13" Tyres in the UK

Postby Spike » 05 Nov 2014 17:53

Where do people get half decent 13" tyres now?

Just put some 15" MGF wheels on and they look good, but I do like the look of the standard alloy.

Liverpool Tyres in Speke I believe. Geoff Dunkley and Steve Jackson will be able to confirm more details as Geoff had them put new 175 Pirelli boots on his Drophead the day before the Anniversary Run.

Hi Spike,

I always use Blackcircles.com, get them delivered to home, you choose can a local tyre fitter on the site, but in my I get one of the apprentice's to fit them at work. I put in my tyre size on the FHC to get these results -

John, they don't seem to have any 185/70/13 tyres, the earlier car size 175/70/13 are much easier to find.

On the assumption that NOS are not particularly desirable when it comes to tyres, are Continental the only premium brand making 185/70/13 now?

Kumho make their Ecsta tyre in 185/70 R13. Although often listed as a track day tyre it is road legal.

Kumho has their Solus tire listed on Tirerack.com. There may be a dealer near you that carries their tires. They have always had a high customer rating. Happy with mine (not Solus but the model out 7 years ago) from hard driving on our narrow, twisty, up and down, Bermuda type roads around Maple Bay. Saved my bacon when some one turned across my path just ahead of me then stopped in panic and I just had time to yank the steering wheel to jink around them. They did howl until they bit as I was sliding sideways. Never saw a passengers eyes grow so big so fast. Poor girl or should I say poor guy as I'll bet he caught **** when she unloaded on him after.

I'm planning to get a set of Uniroyal RainExperts when I change my tyres. They're well rated on tyre reviews.co.uk

Another vote for Kumho here.

I did not expect much when I fitted them to the 7. They went on as my local enthusiast tyre supplier recommended them as the best 13" tyre still available.

No they don't have quite the turn in of the top of the range Pirellis of 15 years ago, but it is almost that long since they made a good tyre in that size. The 13" Pirellis now available are out of Asia, & are not even good Asian tyres.

My Kumhos are equal in cornering power, [after turning in], quiet, & lot better riding than anything I have had on a 7 before.

More importantly, they make the steering about 30% lighter. It was this that really surprised me. This & the fact they still cornered well, I had expected the lightness to relate to a lack of grip.

I was so pleasantly surprised with them, I have now fitted them to my Ford 2+2 Oz Capri, although with it's 15" wheels more highly regarded tyres are available. An 1990s Auto Mazda 323 in drag, the Capri is no sports car, & I can feel no difference to the top range Bridgestones that came off.

What I have seen & felt is a serious reduction in drag. I am using less throttle everywhere for the same performance. This is really noticeable, at the steering wheel, & at the petrol pump.

Being pretty gutless the thing really had to be thrashed to make much progress, & even then it wasn't much. Thus it has always burnt over 10L/100Km, [The TR7 does 8L/100KM]. With the Kumho tyres it is now under 8L/100KM], & still improving as I thrash it less, not much, but less.

Are you getting these things in the UK, & the USA?

They would be available in the US as when I bought the TR7's seven years ago they where the tires used in the Pacific Northwest NASCAR series. I was told at the time they are/were the fastest growing tire company in the world. If they were good enough to win the Dakar (single buggy) they were good enough for me. I just put on a set of 15" of Kumho's on my alloys on the Integra (replacing the 10 and 14 year old tires on it).[:0] No more sliding into the intersection when braking on a wet road.[:p]

Well there's no way my 'period' Goodyear Grand Prix S 185 70 13's are going to get me safely through another winter...

So my research is giving me a choice of three quality brands, all working out at c£250 fitted for four:

Continental EcoContact 3
Firestone F590
Uniroyal Rain Expert

Any thoughts on these? The prices are within a couple of pounds of each other so it's a decision based on factors other than cost. The wear rate is incidental as I think they will age before they wear out. Looks are as important as performance as I'm not going to be driving particularly hard on them - I just have an aversion to cheap or unknown brands on my cars to be honest.
