Dizzy Vac unit

A little off topic but not really.
Does anyone make a timing pointer better than what is on our car.
On mine the reference changes depending on where you are looking at it from
One that actually lays over top of the pulley?

Woody has one, but I don't know if it is any better. Also, check out the picture in the ROM, the place you read on the pointer probably isn't where you would think it is.

If you look at the pointer and then compare the pulley marks.
They are on 2 different planes

The pointer is at 90* at a 10:00 position
and the pulley marks are at 300*
And the position you have to look down to shoot the timing light is about 11:30.

To me this doesn't make sense.
be much easier if there was one of these to use

I just set mine with a vacuum gauge, don't need to try to look at the marks at all.

You know Darrell, I thought of that too, but since mine timing advance is computer controlled I wondered if that would mess things up

On a side note, I brought the dizzy set up to a friends shop who had the proper screw sticks to remove the screws on the plastic cover and I removed my Vac. unit.[:)]

Now I need to make a plate or find a rubber plug to fit the hole

Yeah, I don't know. Do you set the timing now with the engine running, or just set a static TDC? Any idea what inputs the computer uses to determine advance? As long as those were not changing (or not changing too much) when you were messing with the distributor, it might work. Is your engine stock compression? If it is higher, you would probably need to back off from max vacuum a bit. Though I did see on your screen shot that you may have a knock sensor.

1. I set the timing with it running and I will be redoing it again now that I pulled it to remove the vac. piece.
2.No I do not know and I will check
3.No knock sensor on this car. Some GM's did use them so it is in there in the program
