Finding a Radio Aerial to fit the wing/fender of t

Postby Jolyon39 » 19 Oct 2010 04:15

Hi,

My car has an existing hole into which I will mount a new aerial.

Unfortunately the metal surrounding the hole is concave and none of the Auto shops here stock an aerial to fit this.(they only have them for flat surfaces)

What have you used? Do you know where I can buy a suitable one or what to stipulate when ordering one so that I get what I need.

Here are the pics of the location:

Any normal fitting will work. That is almost exactly where my aerial is located & I have the basic Repco aerial. The plastic base will compensate for the curve.

Beat me to it!

I just have a generic flexible one.. Like Peter said, most come a plastic gasket which makes up for the curve.

Same here Jolyon. I have the original short whip on the 7, & a retracting aerial on the 8, & a taller extending one on the spares car, all with the same gasket.

I think they might be a special neoprene. What ever they are they have excellent weather resistance. I just took the one off the spares car, which has been sitting in Queensland sun & weather for at least 15 years, & it's still flexible, & in good condition.

If you can't find anything that looks right, I'll send it to you.

This car must be close to completion if you are focussing on the aerial!

The thing that worries me (on a convertible) is all the stress on the fender that might result without the support the original arial gives which goes down to the bottom bracket which is about 9 1/2" into the trunk. Most arials on the market that go down that far are only about 8" deep. Not as much a factor on a coupe which has a supporting curve on the fender were the convertible are much flatter and more suseptible to warping.

I adapted a door mirror strengthening plate for this, plus a friend who works in the car trade managed to find me an aerial which was also long enough to fit through the support bracket on the inner wing.
