Which gearbox?

Any suggestions on a good way to go with another gearbox, currently I have an LT77 that was rebuilt two years ago but it has expired again during a good thrashing around the local circuit. Therefore looking at replacing it with something more robust, any ideas?[:p][8]

The newer Rover gearbox is a pretty much bolt on, I think it's a 308 or 380 off hand but could be corrected on that. Other than that there is a company in New Zealand that does adapt a Toyota gearbox but shipping would be pretty pricey I think. The LT77 is rated at 300 hp I believe and should last 180,000 miles in normal driving. The Transmission as used in the Rover has bigger bearings and more robust input shaft but not sure how that could be adapted to TR7.

Hi,

R380 is the successor to the LT77 and will easilly cope with 350lb/ft torque. Not a straight forward fit though as you'll have to make some mods to the selector. My Land rover runs this box with 170bhp, around 280lb/ft of torque, Huge 255/85/16 mud terrain tyres and i've not been able to break it yet!

In the book "how to improve the Triumph TR7" it mentions the Toyota W55 box and the Borg Warner T5.

I have some info on this should you need it.

I have a R380 in my TR8.
Biggest problem switching from LT77 to R380 was shortening the R380 gearshifter extension.
Well, that and getting used to finding the reverse below fifth and not to the left of first... [:D]

Yea, I was thinking the R380 route was the best (Now I have looked in the book) DOH! How easy did you find adapting the remote was?[8]

Doable - not easy. There's an article about it in a TRDC magazine...

I have the Toyota box. Once you have the bell housing & prop shaft done you can choose from any of the W-series boxes (W55-W58 [avoid the W50]) but the W57 & W58 are the best, the only difference between those two being the ratios. There is a company in NZ who does the bellhousings & will sell you a complete package but it is actually just one grumpy bloke. He bought the jigs from a proper engineer & uses them to do a very pedestrian job. I had to send mine back & he charged me extra because of the 'damage' I'd done trying to make his half-assed job fit. In my opinion you'd be better off making it yourself if at all possible.

Having said that, I love my Toyota box & its conventionally located reverse gear. I've abused it mercilessly & it hasn't complained. Also I have a quick-shift adapter which raises the lever about 2 inches so it sits almost level with the steering wheel centre & gives it a nice short throw. It gives it a lovely sporty feel.

We had the LT77 fail twice in the race car, (first time due to changes being to 'heavy', second time just started rattling a bit - synchros probably!?) we have just changed over to a Supra box! (not had a competitive outing yet so feed-back to come - early November will be first time out with it)
