Princess 4 Pots & Discs.

Hi everyone, as a new member I would like to say what a great site this is, and thanks to Jolyon for telling me about it.
I'm one of the 7 or 8 kiwis building TR's at the moment, a '81/reg'82 DHC silver one of last 500, starting to sort some
of the parts I have been collecting and have encounterd
a brake problem.I have the princess 4 pot calipers and a pair of Rimmers "brake kit 2" disc's which I was told go together, the
disc is 20mm vented 245mm dia and has a 26mm spacer to give
correct offset when bolted to hub, I have a 8mm spacer in the caliper and when it is all assembled the brake pads overhang
the outside edge of disc by 4mm, and there is a 10mm gap between
disc and the caliper bridge which is more than normal, the
pad swept area is 53mm and disc inner swept area is 53mm but
outer swept area is only 50.5mm so can't move caliper in that
would mean sloting hole or maching eccentric bush's which I
don't want to do.( absolute last opption ).
The orignal princess disc is 270mm dia, this could take
257-260mm with the 10mm clearence to caliper bridge, dose
anyone know of a disc that size with a swept area of 53mm-
55mm? Has anyone else come across this before? or is it just
my lucky streak! And if anyone has this kit from rimmers
they no longer stock replacement disc's only pads.
I really want to use these calipers as I have spacer kit,
new seals, and s/s pistons and they fit under
std alloy wheels.
All sugestions welcome.

Hello Scott

When I fitted Princess calipers using a Rimmers kit in 1991 it had solid TR8 discs which all fitted together, and worked, perfectly.

Perhaps an option for you if the other more learned folks on the forum don't have an immediate more technical solution?

I have Princess calipers on mine with solid discs - Robsport fitted a replacement a couple of years back when a stone became trapped between the disc and the pad, so I suggest you give them a try. Am currently running with Greenstuff pads which are OK, but have heard good things about Mintex.

I did have a set of Princess calipers on the car a long time ago.
The mounting holes had been re-positioned to fit over the discs properly.
As for pads, I'd go for Mintex or Ferodo.
The type depends on how you are going to use the car.

At the moment I have Mintex M1144 in Até calipers (Ford RS/Granada)
These perform very well once on temperature.

I wish I had the option of Princess brakes. In this former colony the Princess was never sold and the Capris are few and far between. One or two Granadas (mk1) made it here and lots of Cortinas. What other brake options are available from other stock vehicles ?

Hi,

There are many options mentioned in prvious posts but here are three for you to look for in SA

Rover SD1 4 pot calipers bolt straight on. There are two versions, solid disc and Vented disc. The Vented ones are off the Vitesse (Twin inlet feed) model and you can also buy them new from Rimmers in a single feed version. Obviously you will need to make up a new Rotor Adaptor and mount a suitable rotor for this. I can take photo's and give you information on this one if you neeed.

Another Option is using Volvo Calipers, 4 pot versions of 1980's models (Note, there are solid disc and two different width vented disc options). For this option you have to redrill the caliper mounts and then make up an adaptor and mount a suitable rotor. TriumphRoverspares.com.au have this kit

Finally you can buy brand new alloy (reduces your unsprung weight) Princess Callipers off HiSpec in the UK (Maybe they have a distributor in SA) http://www.hispecbrake.co.uk/calipers/b4%20Princess.htm

Another option is the one Rodney Wells has done. He uses the commodore caliper. You got the same model only badged as a Chev think it would be Omega?? It uses a Subaru WRX disc there is a thread on it somewhere on here.

Thanks for your replys, dose anyone else with princess calipers have the holes repositioned like Beans has mentioned? Beans, where yours over vented disc's or solid?

I have the Princess calipers over vented discs. I had trouble with them being positioned too close to the hub so I had to slot the caliper mounting holes to move them outboard about 3mm. I had thought that the discs were Capri but just found out that at 255mm diameter they are 10mm bigger which explains a lot.

Hi Scott,

I have princess calipers on one of my TR's, they have had the mounting holes plug filled and redrilled to mount the caliper about 5mm closer, I presume so the brake pads cover the brake disc exactly. My discs are vented and from the Capri 2.8i and are 245mm x 20mm.

My discs were solid.
Holes were repositioned as Dave described.

So has anyone tried the Rover SD1 4 pot solid disc calipers with standard TR8 discs?

Just wondered as Rimmers are offering the solid disc caliper at a very good price right now ....

i have ford capri 2.8 injection discs(bolt straight on AND fit with 13inch rims)with calipers from same vehicle and they are very good with good availability from motor sources! i have recently fitted grooved and drilled discs with mintex 1144 compound pads(excellent,maybe slightly over braked until you get used to them!)TRY THEM...cheaper than the Rimmer conversion and easier to get pads and stuff for..[;)][:p]

I have Escort solid discs and matching M16 calipers,with greenstuff pads these work fine.
