V8 or Turbo V6???????

Postby TriumphCMT » 13 Oct 2010 18:24

Hey guys! I have a stock TR7 and I can't make up my mind about dropping a grand national V6 turbo or the TR8 V8 engine in my 7.

What do you guys think about it? Which engine should I choose?

Anyone put a modern turbo diesel in a TR7, more power and more mpg?

I to am wanting to change my stock engine for something with a bit more ummppphhh and have opted for a Dolly sprint 16v engine.

I suppose the biggest question is how much is your budget [?][?][?], which of the two conversions is going to be the most complex [?][?][?]

I'm willing to sink a lot of money into the 7 and want to do the conversation myself. I just don't know which engine would perform the best in the 7.

I have a friend that has a couple TR8 engines sitting in the garage and was thinking of just dropping one of those in the 7 but if the V6 turbo will perform better, i'll kick myself in the butt for doing that.

More questions that I have is which engines have more problems and are more difficult to install? Which will have more power?

It will depend upon what you want, a V6 turbo will probably be more powerfull and therefore ultimately quicker, a V8 on the other hand will have more bottom end torque and a instant response with no lag making it feel quicker, It will also sound better.

Chris,

Given you are in the US you should talk to Ted Schumacher (http://www.tsimportedautomotive.com/) and Woody Cooper (http://www.thewedgeshop.com/).

Both have extensive knowledge, experience and skills to get the best out of our vehicles.

Chris-Johns Cars in Texas has the bolt in Buick V6 kit but you will need a transmission too. The Rover V8 will reuse a majority of the parts your 4 cylinder has. You can also choose between 3.5, 3.9, 4.0, 4.2, 4.6 and with some machining a 5.0 rover V8. that are all extrnally the same in dimension. IMHO the Rover is the way to go. It is simpler and well originally was a bolt for assembly between the TR7 & TR8. Plus the rumble of a V8 is hard to pass up. Why no do a turbo charges Rover V8.........what V6!

Woody's son Clint is doing a turbo V8 for his car right now (he took out a turbo V6 to put in the turbo V8).

http://thewedgeshop.21.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=620

I always thought it would be easier to have fuel injection with a turbo, but he doing with carb (he knows a lot more about it than I do).

To be honest, the Rover V8 even with moderate modifications still does not put out great HP. For equal HP, I think the V6 would be the cheapest way, but it just seems right to have a V8 under the hood.

My 2¢!

I am putting in a V8 in my TR8. That said, let's look at where we are at. The US. You can go to any auto parts here and get parts for the V6. There are a lot of performance parts for the motor. There is an abundance of them available. For the Rover engine, not so much and limited suppliers.

Now! If you were in the UK, just the opposite would be true. More Rover engines there.

Now, putting the V8 in a TR7. Yes, the car was designed to fit the TR7, but not exactly. You will have to change out the "K" member. You would probably be taking it out to change the mounting bushings anyway, but wait. One of the suppliers "K" member will not clear a set of headers. You will have to find a TR8 bell housing. Really scarce. If the Rover engine comes from an SD1 then you will have to change the motor mount adapter on the bottom of the engine.

Each one has it's advantages. It is how much work and convenience you want. Of course, the resell value will be higher with the V8. Go down to NAPA and ask for a thermostat housing for each. They each have their advantages and disadvantages. Don't forget that you will have to change the front springs with the V6 and devise a better pulley system than the one that John's Cars provides to operate the clutch. Contact "Orange Rag" for his insights.

It was (jokingly) suggested that i put the engine from my beemer into my TR7. 240bhp and 386lb/ft torque, not sure a 3.0l straight 6 would fit though. And it's got an iron block so would be interesting in the corners!

I reckon you'd squeeze 70mpg out of it too, it gets 50 on a run as it is. Well the gauntlet has been laid, anyone brave enough for a diesel conversion?

Thanks for the input guys! I've decided to put the grand national V6 turbo in the 7. I live down here in Texas where the V6 is plentiful and I also live 4 hours away from the location of Johns cars. I've talked to some other guys that know a lot about the TR8 motor and they all just reinforced what you guys say.

They say the V8 is not as reliable as the V6. The all aluminum block has a tendency to warp and crack. Although the V6 is heavier, I think i'll just go for the more reliable and the more availability of parts.

The Buick V6 isn't that much heavier than V8 and as you say they come in Turbo and EFI versions as well. Could have got a whole car for $500 a while back. There are better and less better transmissions available as well. Email Orange Rag (Ron) for his experience with them. He's been through it. All kinds of silly power available, hope your brain and right foot is connected.[8D]

I like Rodney Wells' solution, the 4.5 liter Toyota V8.

Hey, Chris,

There was a Guy from Austin that had a white one for sale just a few months back. It is a really nice sounding car. How are the plans coming for next years Regionals? Let me know when your club has it's meetings and locations, I could just take a drive someday soon.
