hot brakes

Hi all, had new brakes all round 3 months ago, although they perform well (erm as well as TR7 brakes can) the rear shoes get very hot, is this just whilst they bed in? or should i check them out, done about 300 miles on them so far, any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Hi Tracie,

Rear brakes will get warm, but only warm, but nowhere as hot as the front,can you roll the bar forward by hand, if not you may have a seized ( or sticking ) wheel cylinder, or a handbrake linkage / cable. The other rare thing i have seen is the inside of the pipework of the rear flex collasped, so trapping the fluid pressure.

Will get that checked out there must be something wrong, even the wheel nuts are too hot to touch on an average journey, i had my doubts tbh Thanks again

Hi Tracie,

When cold, jack the rear up and turn each wheel in turn, if tight, try moving the handbrake linkage as it disappears into the backplate and see it frees of. The other thing is the handbrake linkage can be have slipped out of postion especially if you have had the shoes off, have a look a my learned friends Jclays site-

also check that no one has routed the handbrake cable wrong and is touching the exhaust pipe which would melt the inner sleeve and prevent the cable returning properly or...........

at the end of the cable going into each of the drums there is a lever type arm two bars on a pivot hinge (you can only see half of these as the other half goes into the drum) these sometimes become seized or very sloppy and stop the brakes working properly.

This is what was wrong with mine and after about an hour of driving one sunday afternoon were smoking.......
you can buy these brand new or the likes of s&s will supply you with some good second hand ones.

It rides again..... and again wehey!!!!!!!
