Superb New TR DVD from John Clancy

John Clancy has just let me have a preview of his super new DVD featuring all the TRs but mainly TR 2-6
It shows a lot of the cars at this years International weekend as well as interviews with a lot of people involved in developing the cars. It really is good and deserves to sell well.

The total running time for this production is just over 3 hours. Owing to the extensive nature of the product there is something for enthusiasts of just about every Triumph model besides the traditional TR’s. TR7’s feature quite a bit on disc 2

Strewth, this one isn't even back from the labs yet and it's selling through the roof. Hardly anyone has seen all 3 hours of it yet but word has certainly got around early. I've not had a reaction like this with any previous release.

It appears from Johns statement above that I have let the cat out of the bag early, sorry John but this DVD is so good I needed to tell everyone.Should be a sell out.

NTSC is always dificult as I hear that NTSC stands for Never Twice Same Colour [:D]

Sorry, still can't duplicate them in NTSC as that would double the pressing cost and I'd be stuck with well over 1000 discs sitting around in the hope they'd sell one day. 1000 copies is the minimum that can be pressed now as it costs more to get just 500 done.

However, NTSC is becoming less and less of an issue as time goes on simply because convergence between television and computers is moving on apace. Anyone with a computer from the last five years or so shouldn't have a problem running the DVD's as I don't apply a region code.

It used to be that any cheap Chinese made DVD player would play both NTSC and PAL. Now that DVD players are soon to be a thing of the past as Blu Ray players dropping below $100 and they don't play
PAL (here). At least until China starts making Blu Ray players like they did DVD players. I don't know if any of the current Computer video editing programs can convert from PAL to NTSC. I'd rather watch it on my 50" HDTV screen than my 22" computer screen. (I have a stock of cheap DVD players that I have hooked up to my TV system just in case).[:p]

Also WIFI'ing from your computer to your HDTV is just around the corner (if fact it's here now)

With the coverage of more than just wedges on this disc I would bet that you would have no problem selling 1000 in the states. The TR2-6 market is a MUCH larger one over here. Wedges are slowly building in popularity. I would watch it on my computer, but would prefer to watch it on a larger screen.

You'll be surprised to hear that the most I could expect to sell in the States of any title would be around 100 and that is why I can't justify NTSC copies. 'Bullet' has done extremely well in North America nad must have sold more than 100 but even so this is nowhere near the number to have covered the cost of getting NTSC copies pressed.

It's a shame but that's just the way it is. I can only do my best with these releases and I hope for real Triumph enthusiasts it gives them something they can enjoy over and over again even if they don't have a PAL DVD player and have to watch on a PC or Mac.

That IS very surprising. I am wondering what sort of market research provided that number. With large national clubs, especialy ones that concentrate more on thr TR2-6 models, active US based forums like 6-Pack with over 4,000 members, BritishCarForum with over 11,000 members (easily half of which are Triumph owners), and the large retailers of parts and accessories like Moss, Roadster Factory, Victoria British, British Parts Northwest, Triple C Accessories etc... I'm extremely surprised that the number isn't quite a bit higher. Especially with Christmas shopping right around the corner.

Very few clubs are interested. A few businesses sell them but apart from Robsport they generally only sell very few copies.

You have to remember most of the clubs are run by volunteers who in the main don't wish to give up more of their time to try to sell a product to make their club some money. Occasionally you come across a club like the TRDC who go at it full throttle and sell hundreds of copies and I expect there is an equivalent club in the US but I haven't found them yet. I'm under no illusions when I make these DVD's how small the market is but so far they have all done okay. The TR7 'Bullet' DVD is still the biggest seller.

The problem in N/A is all the clubs are pretty fragmented. There's you're mult marque clubs like Old English Car Club and all your marque specific ones like Jaguar, Triumph, MG clubs etc. and in places like Calgary they have an all Marques club in the Vintage Car Club that include everything from Porches to Jag's etc. with little to no inreaction between them other than a few shows like ABFM in Portland and Vand Dusen in Vancouver. There are dozens and dozens of them and that's just in the Pacific Northwest. It's very hard to get any traction selling through these small entities. The only way is through the majors vendors like VB, Moss USA, Roadster Factory, Spitbits, British Parts Northwest etc. But then you run into the NTSC/PAL issue that they don't want to get involved with. There is no easy solution to this marketing problem that I can see other than word of mouth on a one by one basis.
