Motor “andâ€￾ world in the UK

Yesterday my mane and I changed over the rear axle on my 7. During this I needed some diff/gearbox oil, so I went down to my local motor “andâ€￾ world, as I like going there more than other high street places. Yes, I know I should of gone to one of the specialist suppliers, but it was Sunday and I needed it quick.

I got a litre bottle and then decided to go back and get another bottle, to make sure I had the right amount. At the desk, before I paid, I sad to the guys “if I do not need this and it is not opened as long as I keep the receipt, I can bring this back?â€￾ The guy said I cold for an exchange or a credit not. To which I said how about a full refund. He said no to this at which point I said “Oh OK I will leave itâ€￾ and walked out.

I have had a look on the net and in particular the sales of goods act and it appears that a shop does not have to give a refund. I thought other UK based members may wish to know this as I will be careful in any future purchases.

Quite right. If you purchase something from them and they sell it in good faith and you just change your mind or do not need it, you have no right to go back to the shop and demand a refund or even a credit note - after all they have done nothing wrong.

It is at the shops discretion to offer a refund or even a credit note, they do not have to. Many do though for customer relations purposes. If you want a refund or exchange, then do as you did and check with them whether they will or not, then you have the choice whether to buy from them.

If they get a part wrong or give you an incorrect quantity (say too much gear oil in this instance), then you would have the right to a refund as it was their error.

Shops that play the a$$hole like this find that people will go elsewhere and will fold in this recession that we are meant to be coming out of!!!!! Oh they have been hit hard by this recession and closed around more than half of their outlets.

I will take my custom to another shop and it is OK saying “Quite rightâ€￾ but unhappy customers do not come back! No customers results in no money.

Andy's right it's not the law, it goes by store by store and it's common to do it for customer relations. It is so common we expect it but it's up to us to know the store's policy, it's not our right. Refunds are quite common for large store's/chains but there are small ones/specialty stores that don't. Typically they will have exchange/refund policy of the store displayed on a sign near the cash register.

I'd prefer not to buy oil that has been returned to the store. I know they have seals but people are ingenious at getting around security measures. A store credit is fair enough in my mind.

Phil, sorry but I am a bit puzzled by your overreaction. I said quite right because it <b>is</b> quite right, that is the law, it was not aimed at you, it was a reply to your post.

I also cannot understand why you are so upset by the shops reaction and why they are "a$$holes". Honest question for you. If you sold something on, let`s say E bay, and the purchaser then rings you up and asks for their money back because they changed their mind or do not need it anymore, would you be happy returning it and losing your "profit"?

No harm in having an extra bottle of diff oil on the shelf anyway! I've got several!!
