yes, was that a ford? the car folded jamming the doors shut then erupted into a fireball. Nice.

This will stop it gushing out in an accident, also the boot will be firewalled as a matter of course.

To the original question...You can buy a universal sending unit at most parts stores. Fits in a round hole with several screws and the float arm is adjustable.


I don't run a spare either. I carry a plug kit, 12 volt compressor and a cell phone. I wouldn't want a tank there though. That's where the cooler with the beer fits!![:D]

I am fortunate that my OE tank is excellent. I blasted and painted it when it was out for the collision repairs.

Thanks Jim. I'm going to do a bit more research into how these fuel cells are fabricated before making mine. i cannot imagine they would let them race cars with this set up if they were not safe. Perhaps they're only safe in conjunction with a roll cage which extends back further than the tank?

Well a fuel cell is different than what you are contemplating. They are filled with a foam type material that helps retain the fuel in the event the outer tank is ruptured. Still can be compromised in the event of a hard impact but not at all like a simple hollow tub.

Personly I would try to repair what you have, you might find the rust is not to bad in which a good clean out and treating the inside of the tank (you can get special fuel resistent sealer that you tip in tank and swill around and coats the surface) you might solve your rust problem.However if you go for the tyre well tank one of your first problems will be fuel surge, as base is going to quite a large area, followed by pick up probs. A proper fuel cell consists of a box normally aluminium for lite weight, a bag or blader made from a special reinforced rubber that fits inside which is filled with the special tank foam Jim mentioned the main purpose is to stop surge,
But will also slow fuel escape which should not happen as in an accident the box will bend but the rubber blader will distort with it, it dose work. sorry if this is a bit long,hope it has helped.

Hi Scott / Jim, on the first page of this thread i posted a link to the tank foam you mention and is the type i'm going to buy. I wasn't going to fit an un-baffled (no foam) tank in the boot! This tank will be stainless though, i'd have to pay for ally[:D] Thanks for the tip on the fuel bladder, i wasn't aware they were used in conjunction with the foam. Bit more research me thinks! The car's going to be off the road until next year probably anyway so have plenty of time.
