Wiring or relay?

Postby hymie747 » 16 Aug 2010 14:47

Just purchased a 1980 Tr7 Convetible 2 monhs ago. Recently the right headlight does not pop up. I cleaned the red connector on this headlight and nothing, cleaned the ground, and nothing. Then went to the relays, pulled them and switched them and still the same problem on the right side. But the relay from the right side worked on the left headlight. Replaced them to their original positions and now the right one will go down, but will not go up except by manually turning knob. Also tried a new relay and same problem.Have to manually raise the light but it will go down by using the switch.Could this be a loose wire, motor or what? Seems like motor is out because it goes down, relay was replaced and nothing, also looked a headlight switch and it was clean. Can I get a wiring schematic to show which wires do what and or some help? Thanks alot.

Ok I did somemore searching and some more detective work. Now what I have is that I know the relays are good as I swiched and still have the same problem. Also pulled and cleaned the master switch, no luck. As since I have also checked with a test light for power to the relays, on the left I have power going up and down, on the right I have power going down, but not up. I can raise the right one manualy and it will close by using the master switch. So I am guessing I have a broken wire between the switch and the relay?. Any other thoughts, before dismanteling the dash>

As my lights have always worked perfectly I have no personal experience in this but as the light goes down and not up and as the motor only turns one direction I am wondering if the problem is in the position sensing block. The earlier cars had many problems with them but they improved the sealing on it but reguardless that would be my guess. If it was a motor power problem per se, it should show up with motor going up and down.

If the light will retract the motor is OK. In the limit switching system attached to the motor, there is a switching mechanism containing brass contacts that can become corroded or dirty over time. If you clean and lubricate this it should work OK. It's a simple mechanical system with no electronics, probably derived from a windscreen wiper parking system (or two).

I am guessing the problem lies in the wiring between switch and relay. With a test light I have power to both power sides of left relay, but when I go to check the right relay, no power to either sides of the relay, when I hit the main switch. Also if I jump power from a terminal on the left relay and jump to the right relay, both lights go up and down with no stopping, until jumper is removed. So it looks like something frommain switch to the right relay.

No - I go with Stag's suggestion - check the limit switching arrangement.

OK I checked out the limiting actuator. Seems you were right as the wire to the lower contact was rotted away. No what I would like to know is,Is that some type of resistor on the wire or can I just solder another wire in there. Looks like it say Lucas England and maybe the number 625.I tried using a resistor of 680 ohms and no luck, I could not get power to the contact. So can I just wire it direct?
