Vacuum advance unit source?

Postby stever_sl » 11 Aug 2010 17:17

The shop that's working on my TR8 (starting and idling troubles) says the car needs a replacement vacuum advance unit, but they can't find one for sale anywhere. After checking Victoria British, Moss Motors, Rimmers, Wedgeparts etc I can't see one either - well, one of those places lists a unit for $999 but there's no picture and it just seems like a mistake to me. Is it really necessary to buy an entire new distributor to sort this out???

And I just answered my own question, I think. Rimmers is in fact showing one - don't know how I could have missed it earlier. I'm not really stupid, folks, just old and losing my mental powers!

Same problem with TR7's with the Delco ignition. I have not checked with them yet, but am told that these guys in Minnesota do rebuilds on alot of vacuum units. I know some people who have had their dizzy rebuilt by them and were happy with the results.

I'm always glad to find another supplier of parts or services - thanks!

You can have vacuum units rebuilt at Quality Rebuilds in New Zealand. I had a complete distributor rebuilt by him with new cap and points supplied, the Delco one for UK cars, and his work was excellent. This cost me about NZ$260 from memory

The price for a vacuum unit may be excellent as well as our dollar is only worth 69 US cents.

His rebuild of vacuum units includes fresh zinc plating, diaphragms from modern materials and they look perfect.

Petronixs offers a new replacement distributor that has improved pickup internals and also a vacuum advance. I think they go for $225.00 and drop right in and some wiring needs to be sorted but will outlast the originals.
