Premium editions...

Postby Hoops » 23 Jul 2010 12:28

Is there any way to verify which models were originally the 'Premium' editions? A few things had made me doubt that mine is an original one (not that it makes any difference to me) with the fact its had a re spray at some point (i can see green through a few little thin paint patches and it does not have the original decals.)

The main reasons are that my long term plans include possibly doing a V8 conversion, which i dont really want to do if this is one of the few proper 'premium' editions left.

Cheers, Rob

Rob there is absolutely no doubt about the authenticity of your car it is 100% Premium Limited Edition. As for the V8 conversion, one of the nicest Premiums in the country has been converted to V8,its the owners decision.

Ah cheers Chris. It does not matter to me, but i know a few of the other premium owners mentioned a while back that it would be good to keep the premiums (as only a few made) original.

During the conversion keep the original 2.0 litre and bits and you can always convert it back from V8 again later !

I did this years ago with a very clean and original drophead. Also gave me the chance to tidy the 2.0 litre stuff up, e.g. paint subframe, degrease and paint engine etc.

How can you be sure? If not original decals it would tend to indicate a respray and green underneath would tend to indicate a different original colour. Did they use green primer? The primer under my original paint is grey. I don't think they assigned a block of numbers for VIN unlike the Spider which did have a block of numbers assigned them. Would you be able to tell from Heritage Certificate? The original Premium had halogen headlights, does yours Rob?

A Heritage Certificate will show if its a Premium, I had one done a few years ago and its stated on it. I'm not sure if they were built in a batch with consecutive VIN numbers, probably not. But it would be good to see how many are left from the original 400 made!

Cheers,
Dave

I wont argue with anyone about this, I know for sure that this car is a Premium, why would I say it was and risk losing my reputation if the car wasnt what Id said it was when I sold it. I have owned more than one of these cars and know erxactly how to check their authenticity and am upset that someone who has probably never seen one would question this.

Didn't know you had hands on experience with the car or questioning your veracity or knowledge of the car (who else would know better?) I was just wondering about the questions Rob brought up. If there is green below the paint it still begs the question, is it green primer or did the factory just take a green car and paint it black to make a Premium out of it or perhaps less likely did some PO take a Premium and paint it green then later repaint it black to take it back to original colours. Triumph have done some pretty strange things in the past and you can never right off any scenerio as impossible. I knoe of a blue coupe that was painted green(close to Triton)off the showroom floor, then painted a close but different shade of green last year.

The acid test with Premiums is whether the chassis plate has PMA on it as they were the only UK cars painted this colour. Who would want to fake one as they arent worth any more than a standard car. Look at the following and you will see its one of the cars used in the Premium section.

Having H4 doesnt mean much as many owners have converted standard cars. The previous owner who painted the car could not locate a set of original decals for the car so he masde a set up. Anyone who knows about these cas will see straight away that its the real thing.

As i said it does not bother me (all i wanted was a black TR7) i was just checking to see if the general consensus was not to modify a limited edition.

And even with a new and slightly tuned 8v 2Litre engine i think that would be enough for me, depends if i manage to save up enough for the conversion.

I wouldn't modify it. If you want a V8 modify a Standard TR7 as there should still be plenty around hiding in garages etc. Hasbeen has the right idea with one of each (TR7 and TR8) or better yet Chris with one of each special TR7/8's.
