cost of full respray?

That time has come, and so I'm looking to get my V8 FHC resprayed soon.

It's fitted with new GRP bonnet and boot lid, wheel arches and spoiler so instead of trying to match up the panels thought it may be better to get the whole car done again.

The present colour is a Peugeot (EWT) alpine white.

Not having had a car done for many, many years has anyone recently had a paint job done? What sort of costs should I brace my wallet for? [:D]

Oh does anyone happen to know anyone good (and reasonable) in Cumbria?

For my project, I've been quoted between £1000 & £1500 for a bare metal spray job.

That's based on me presenting the bare shell, etch primed and ready to paint. Any remedial work would be extra to this - obviously if you want them to strip the car and do any necessary bodywork it's going to be a lot more. Alternatively, if it's just a quick rub down and topcoat you're after, then it could end up a bit less.

Of course, I have come across places that will do it for £500, but I think my car had one of those cheapy blowovers before and it was a mess - overspray everywhere, sags and runs and orange peel aplenty. Personally, this time round I'd rather pay the extra. [;)]

Buy a compressor kit with spray gun from Machine Mart - and a few litres of cellulose (plenty on ebay) - and get on with it! Just do one panel at a time - and take your time. I only ever spray out doors now - on dry/warm windless days. And DO NOT attempt to use 2K paint - it will kill you.

That and a $60 power buffer with some polishing paste. You could also do it with aeresol cans but it would be pretty costly. Painting is an art, some people can easily learn to do it, some take longer to get good at it and some shouldn't go anywhere near it. If you want the advantages of 2 pack epoxy you have to get a proper in line forced air respirator or pay the bucks to have it done professionally.

A decent spray over paint should cost about $2,000, a down to metal and paint about $4,000 but it depends were you are. A Spitfire club member just 30 miles south (Victoria) couldn't find anyone to paint his car (they just wanted insurance jobs) but when he did they charged $8,000 (with some minor body dings fixed as well). Pays to shop a around and check out previous paint jobs and reputations if you can.

I ran into the same thing when I was looking for a shop to do the 8. "We only do collision repair" is what they said. Gee I thought that a body and paint shop was what I wanted but I guess I was wrong. Oh, and my paint job with the body work (door dent and flare repair) was quoted at $3500. I've paid $1700 on it so far and I removed all of the trim myself. They've redone the front left flare that was causing them trouble and with any luck it'll be all green again today. I am kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop, I'm not sure if he'll up the price because of the unforseen problems he had with it.

have thought about doing it myself , I've done a couple of cars a few years ago and they turned out nice.

what about doing the bonnet black with the rest of the car white?

There's always the famous "$50 paint job" (whatever that works out to in pounds or Euros these days) with ordinary home store paint - http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master ... paint.html or another approach here - http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Poo ... nt-your-c/. People who try it seem to have generally positive comments. Many years ago I rented a sprayer and blew a bunch of coats of white lacquer on my TR7, and no roller or foam brush could have left a rougher surface (I had no idea what I was doing). Seriously, it looked like I'd undercoated the whole car in white. I spent several weeks wet-sanding and compounding by hand, and when I was finished the paint was like glass, just absolutely perfect. So I'm all in favor of any method that gets the pigment down, as long as you're willing to level and smooth and polish it once it's there.

when i was a kid I remember my dad hand painting a vauxhall viva in a local car park with black emulsion and rubber roofing paint on the roof it looked like a vinyl roof, even filled the holes with screwed up paper and tin foil and decorators filler just too sell it.
and the best thing was he put gold JPS striping on it.[:D][:D]
the things that went on in the 70's

does it still happen now...........

yeah get a few cans and do it panel at a time!!!! and black bonnet white car means a taxi in cardiff too,..... rattle canning mine satin black at the moment panel at a time when weather is nice and i'm not in work just to get it all one colour......[:D]

I'm going down the DIY route myself, i'm sorry but £1500 is a ridiculous amount of money to pay somebody else to make a hash of it. My 7 endured the £1500 paint job with the privious owner, i'm still picking bits of masking tape out of the window surround, scraping overspray from the tops of the side windows and given up trying to get rid of it from the black door card tops. They even declared they'd done him a favour when they sprayed the bumpers black. No plastic primer, just black paint straight on the bumpers. no prizes for what's happening to that now. They hadn't cleaned the body properly before spraying and as a result the paint is peeling from around the running lights (black covers on mine), the edges of the dipped part on the roof and various other places. Don't get me started on the runs[:(!]

Yup, lots of bedtime reading on "how to paint your car" a wooden frame covered with polythene to park the car in, fresh air supply, 2 litres of paint, 2 litres of thinners and lots of coffee. I mean, how hard can it be[B)]

yes looks patchy but was first coat......... spraying outside so have to wait for the weather........., bonnet and boot not done as have replacements to fit to car which will get sprayed off the car......
