5 speed gear box

I have read on the forum that many are using the Pennzoil Synchromesh. I have bought the Quaker State Synchromesh. Is it the same spec?

I know the Penzoil is the direct replacement for the GM fluid that is used for the LT77. I dont know anything about Quaker State though.

FWIW, I recently went shoping for some trans fluid for a customers MGB as he had mentioned wanting a synthetic. I tried 3 parts stores including a NAPA and Advance. Not one had any manual trans specific fluid. Several varietys of ATF and regular gear oil but no MT fluid. I found this rather strange. I get a discount on the GM stuff and have been using it. I run ATF in the B with OD. My guess is the Quaker State will be fine as long as the viscosity is thin like the other brands.

Good Morning, Johnluss! We offer our heartfelt thanks to your volunteering to be the guinea pig for the lab testing of the Quaker State MTF in your LT77. As we are now in the midst of summer on this side of the equator, we look forward to your reports on the 1st to 2nd gear shift, the smoothness of the 3rd to 2nd gear downshift, changes in gear whine, and the amount of swarf production in the gearbox sump.

What kind of gearbox oil were you using before the change to the Quaker State?

Thanks Mildred but I don't like very much being the guinea pig but I will report my findings. I do not remember what I was using before but getting in second gear cold was difficult (I have heard that somewhere before) also the downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. I will check also for the gear whine (I have a musical ear). But your "swarf production" worries me. I did not intend to drain it for a few years.

I made the test drive earlier and it is shifting and running very smoothly. I had problem before shifting from 1 to 2 and 3 to 2.
But I think that the leaking is worse, oil being more fluid.

I also just did the syncromesh fluid swap for the first time(work for GM , got the stuff for cost + 10%)
Did notice a incredible amount of "swarf" in the drain plug [:0], but havn't noticed any new seepage yet....mind you it's only been short trips so far, the 300km road trip is coming in two weeks......
Probably flush out the trans again over the winter,(i don't plan on doing a heck of a lot of milage this year) will be curious to see if there is the same amount of swarf this time.

I use the Pennzoil synthetic synchromesh GL4 as the local Lordco had it in stock. I didn't have any more oil leakage but then I didn't have any before. When I drained the old oil out (that had been in there from 1999 at least) there was very little swarf on the plug. I wondered what all these people were talking about on the forum.

When I drained Yellow TCT in prep for removing engine/trans there was a lot of swarf on the plug (the oil had a green tinge to it due to type/make of oil). There was gold tinged metallic swerls in it so I expect some syncro wear. I has only 30,000 miles so I didn't/didn't expect too much wear but I will open it up when it's out.

Technical term for the little bits of metal machined off parts during production or while in service.
Does anyone have experience with "Import" grade ATF in an LT-77?
I filled my gearbox with it last year with good results so far but I'm not sure it was the best choice.

The swarf is in the sump of your LT77 and magneticly stuck to your drain plug.
