Mine had the dreaded wheel wobble from 55mph to about 63 mph when I went to drive it home after purchase. It was quite violent but smoothed right out when I took it over 65mph once (because of a big truck bearing down on me on the Seattle bypass causeway). The tires were bald and there was no steering column bushing. After new ball joints, tie rod ends, greasing steering rack, new tires, front springs and shocks, hard poly on the front end, poly steering column bushing, all was smooth. I just did a 5 wheel tire rotation (alloys) after 4,000 miles and everything is still silky smooth. I think the main culprit was the tires but no way of knowing if there was any other factor or combination of factors. I think any one of these can cause a problem either in combination or by themselves and until you keep at them until the problem disappears you can't be sure.

I think you are exactly right. It is a combination. That's why no one seems to be able to nail it down to one component. I did nearly the same as above getting to the tires last. Prior to installing the new tires I had quite a bit of improvement. But it took the new tires to smooth it out completely.
