Fender Flares

Postby Spectatohead » 26 May 2010 00:49

Well the car has been at the body shop for almost a week now. He is trying to do some forensic work so that he can give me a good estimate. The front left fender flare is the worst spot. They have cracked and started to separate. Water has gotten into the front left and you could see rust stains coming out of the crack. The body guy said that there was still water down inside. The flares were riveted to the fenders but no adhesive was used. This allowed them to separate. Not to mention that way too much bondo was used. With any luck I should have an estimate by the end of the day tomorrow. I'm dreading both the estimate and telling my wife how bad it is. Hopefully it won't be as bad as I'm thinking.

It's weird not seeing it out in the garage. At least the weather has been horrible so that I haven't been missing it too much. My son had to bring his Saab into the garage because it is leaking so bad all of his electricals have gone haywire. Even with a new top it leaks worse than any Triumph I've ever owned.

I hope it doesn't hurt too much. As a hobby its still cheaper than gambling, alcoholism or hookers. Don't know if that helps.

Sounds like he wants to do it right, the only way to do it. Don't you hate it when someone makes a repair and takes a short cut to only make it harder for youlater on. Good luck on the quote.

Finally got the estimate. It's only about $500 over my budget. He said it could be less and that this is a worst case estimate. I'm going down tomorrow to pull the bumpers and trim. Really nice of him to let me do it in his shop. Then it should be done in less than two weeks. It might be done in time for a local weekly cruise-in that is featuring Triumph on the 23rd of June. Hopefully the weather will be a lot better by then. Tomorrow is the first one of the summer and it is supposed to be raining buckets.

Good luck. I have always really liked the look of the fenders on your car (sad that they can be a big problem).

Okay, it is on it's way. The rust under the front left flare wasn't too bad.

I'm thinking of having the air-dam done in body color. I'm not totally sure yet.Image

Either, or. With the bumper off those wild flares cry out for a slightly more radical air dam integrated into the body, like a toned down Lanocha Racing one.

I really like the way Beans' looks. I'd love to blend mine together somehow. It looks a bit tortured as it is. The problem is cost, or more specifically my wife's resistance to any more costs. My $2500 project car is approaching $8000 and she doesn't want to let me do too much more. The bumper kind of hides the junction between the air-dam and the fender. So I think that I'll leave the air-dam as it is but in body color.

Not the greatest angle, but:

Love those flares[8D]

Owning an English car is like looking after a small child. They require constant attention, leak everywhere and as soon as your back is turned your wallet gets flushed down the toilet.

Should be getting color, tomorrow or Wednesday. I'm getting pretty excited. The dent in the door had been there for over 20 years. The flares were repaired nicely.

Jim,

Word of advise - take the headlight shells out of the car and paint them separately. You will get a much better job.
