As anyone successfully managed to fit a 6x9 speaker under the grille on top of the dash? Got any pics? [8D]

If you can find another place for the wiring and connectors it should be possible to fit a shallow speaker there [:p]

There is another option should the 6 x 9s be too tight, you can buy 6 x 8s, they are an upgrade for ford focus speakers and apart from the obvious, are a little less deep than 6 x 9s. Mine were made by Pioneer but if i remember rightly were only available in pairs. The scrappy should have loads for sale for a couple of quid.

Why would you want a 6x9 or any other speaker for that matter fitted there?

you would not get a good sound from it as there is no cabinet for the speaker to base reflex

much better to fit good quality front speakers and sound deadening, with some kind of sub to give some base...

this is what I had done recently and it did not cost a lot of money

I have JL audio tr525-cxi coaxials speakers in the front

also a wee bit of dynamat xtreme sound deadening

A big difference in sound

they are realy good I normally run it at half power as this in well enough

Again, folks, this bone has been well chewed. The speaker that fits is a 5" by 7" dual cone full range speaker. My spare was bought in 2002 from Radio Shack. This is a company that should remove the 'Radio' from it's name as it no longer sells car speakers.

We added this speaker some 15 to 20 years ago and have replaced it once.

Here is the spare speaker.

Due to the limited space in the dash speaker compartment, use a speaker with a smaller magnet on the back as a large magnet will not fit.

What is nice is standard size speakers in the door panels combine with the dash speaker to flood the cabin with just the right amount of sound without it being overwhelming. I like it this way.

You can buy flat panel speakers for computers. They will need to be aadapted & I suspect they are not high powered but with a sub the should be OK. Just search google for flat panel speakers.

Hi Mildred, that was exactly what I was curious about.

As you say Stevie, no point putting a bass end speaker there as it will just rattle the dash with no benefit but a full range one like Mildred has would reflect sound from the windscreen to give you a face up direction. If you combined that with your behind seat sub then I reckon that would have great effect.

Loving the sound deadening too [:D]

Presumably the factory did consider this as otherwise why put the hole there with the correct shape etc? And a grille over it too....

Wayne, Dynamat is expensive [:0]. I used the sticky backed roof flashing from any builders supliers.
Comes in all differet sizes and does the same job but much cheaper [:D].

Sorry to slightly hijack the thread, but it is reasonably close...

Has anyone made a replacement for the grille-y thing that covers this hole that doesnt warp in the sun? Okay, I live in Alice Springs so probably have more sun/heat than most, but I would be pretty sure most cars would have experienced a hot enough day that this plastic panel is now warped beyond use.

I was thinking of making a panel that would incorporate either guages or satnav and am wondering if anyone else has gone down this line?

Yes, there was a guy about three years ago that built a matching cover that was wedge shaped that had three gauges installed. Couldn't find the photos.
