Respray costs

Postby prlee » 27 May 2010 18:04

Anyone got an idea what sort of price a simple respray cost?

I know full resprays are £1500 plus but I cannot afford this at the moment.

The respray would be based on a 2 pack base coat respray with the car fully preped by myself with trim removed.

I understand the paint itself would cost between £100 and £150.

What are the benefits of the additonal laquer coat?

In the past I have resprayed my cars using cellulose and cut back and polished, this is not an option at the moment.

2 pack epoxy paints are the modern paint now used by professionals. It is covered by an epoxy clear coat. It is scratch resistant and resistant to chemicals. Very glossy. In Canada water based epoxy paints will mandated in near future.

Acrylic urethane paint can be done by pro or home hobbyist. If your doing a mettalic colour a clear coat must be appied over it which protects it and gives it a glossy look.

Acrylic Enamel paints can be used for non mettalic colours. It isn't as shiney but needs to be buffed up with power buffer (or lts of elbow grease.) This comes closest to the way most TR7's would look from the factory (which used thermo plastic acrylic paint where it is sprayed on then baked to give the glossy appearance).

Lacquer is not often used and in some locals is illegal. It is the least resistant to chemicals (bird poop etc.)

I got a epoxy respray on the Toyota about five(?) years ago. I saved $300 taking off stuff. A number of parking lot dings were repaired. It was done by a well equiped modern paint shop with a good reputation. The cost was $1700. Convert to your local currency at xe.com although this will only be an approximation as it was a period of time ago with different currency exchanges and inflation in interm.

I was lucky to get my DHC sprayed through a friend workshop.
Cost of the materials only was nearly € 1300,- (and that was a direct from the factory price with no commercial gain).

mine cost £800 any metal work was done prior to this, and I striped the car before hand it was also done as a favour and was a £800 job and when it's done again (not for a while that is) I'll be more inclined to spend about £1500-£2000 I would expect a body shop would be in the region of £1000-£2500 top end if baking

It rides again..... and again wehey!!!!!!!

A profesional reputable bodyshop using decent materials and paint will start approximately £2500, I know this as I am in a bodyshop daily, paint can cost £600 - £700 alone plus your primers , prep products and labour etc.

DIY paint jobs will become harder to do with the new laws and modern paint properties.

We may have to sneak it acrossed the border from unregulated USA like cocaine or import it from China and have them list it as imitation Ming vases.[:D]
