Disc Brake Back Axle Slotted In

Postby john 215 » 25 Apr 2010 19:51

Hi,

Spent today fitting my new disc brake back axle, been working on it off and on for 18 months or so and today was the day for it to leave the conservatory and take up its new home.

Also has the benefit of a set the rare 2.84 : 1 gears installed.

Took her for a quick blast and a definite improvement, parking brake is excellent [:D] As for the the taller CWP allows a lot more use of the sheer amount of torque a 4.6 has [8D]

A few pictures of the days work-

Nice set up [;)]

And slightly of topic and at the risk of sounding slightly anorak ...
Your springs are nearly binding while the car is stationary and on axle stands.
A sure recipe for a very bumpy ride i.m.h.o. [:I]
(unless you have very strong springs that is)

Looking good there John.

That axle ratio must suit your 4.6 down to the ground. What's the likely rpm at 70mph now?

Intersting pics...interesting questions. You don't have an old F1 active suspension up your sleeve do you?[:D]

What disc's calipers and handbrake cable did you use and was any machining or additonal brackets required.

It looks a very good set-up.

So John,
you never got rid of the old pivot point in the aluminium cover?

The set-up looks real nice, could have been oem if they'd had the economy and foresight...
Cheers,

Hi Gents,

Thank you for your comments,
Willy Wonka, the discs are of the front of a Austin Rover Maestro, they just nneded a lip turning down that they have on the inside. The half shafts also neede a visit to the lathe for a trim. The parking brake cable are modified VW Golf MK4 ( Fleabay £2.50 for the pair!! ) The calipers are 1981 Audi Quattro rear made by Girling with homemade mounts for the carrier. when i have little more time i post all the build up picture.

Odd, steel welding not a problem but alloy a black art to me!!!
Rear spring a bit tierd now after 20 years of use but i love the stance they give, even if my back does'nt [B)]

Only had a quick run out on Sunday as the parking brake cables run close over the top of exhaust tail pipes ( waiting on some heat proof covers from Merlin Motorsport ) but does stop better even with the pads not being bedded in. The new ratio move thing up half a gear if you know what i mean but will still light the tyre up when pulling away on a hill in second no problem, these 4.6 are just torque monsters [:D]

Cheers John

Nice work John. Looking forward to hearing all the details. Unfortunately some of the bits harder to source this side of the pond.

I'd love to have a 4.6 too. But with my 3.45 & Quaife to try & dip into the 12s [}:)]

I did a similar conversion on my MG-ZA using the calipers from an MGF. They are very similar to your Audi units but are branded Lucas.
Both are a very simple handbrake solution, avoiding a separate hamdbrake caliper. The MGF calipers should be adaptable for the 7/8 as well.
