I need technical help please !!!

I have a 1981 TR7 2.0L roadster. I just bought it and I have a coolant leak. There is a 60mm x 20mm slot next to the freeze plug on the right side of the block (passenger side). There is a complete open hole that looks like it goes to the waterjacket.does anyone know what goes into this slot or what is the purpose. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark[:(]

A horizontal slot on the engine block itself? That is a cooling slot for the water pump. What you will need to do to correct your leak is install a new water pump. There are several threads within here and the TR7 forum that explain what needs to be done and how.

Good luck. I just replaced mine too. Its not too hard of a job to tackle.

Don't necessarily need a new one, you can get a rebuild kit with gaskets, seal and bearing for less. I didn't know it was a cooling slot, I thought it was a slot for the water to go out if the seal fails so it doesn't get to the bearing and oil.

The rebuild kit can only be used on an impeller shaft that is pristine. Your's, however, will not be pristine. I can mystically see it from here. There will be corrosion pits, scoring, and more pitting. Any attempt to smooth off the damage will result in a shaft smaller than the seals which takes you back to square one.

So it's Victoria British to the rescue for a new water pump. As you have a 1981 TR7, you will need a 12 vane pump. Please use the SEARCH function at the top right of your screen to view the various articles on water pumps. Also, please obtain the proper factory workshop manual for your car and read about 14 times the section on water pumps. The manual can be ordered from the various ebay vendors or downloaded from our Clay Thompson's website, I believe.

As it has been remarked, a TR7 water pump is to many a rite of passage into the TR7 world.

Actually it is OK to click on reply if your post refers to a portion of a previous post which may even be several posts back and not to the post topic in particular.
