Tyre size for standard alloy wheels?

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

I just bought my 80 with 195 70 13s on it they look great but they rub in the front on turns and its a pretty nasty sound.

The handbook says for standard Triumph alloys-185/70 HR 13
These alloys are `5.5 J` type. 195`s will also effect speedo accuracy[:(]-are you sure you have `factory alloys` or aftermarket[?]

Do they rub equally on both sides? If so check wheel offset. If that is 25mm I'm afraid the tyres are just to big.
Otherwise check the castor angle of your front struts. They should be equal on both sides at around 3°.

I have 205/50x15 on one of my cars and never had any problems (on a standard body shell). But these are slightly smaller then your tyres (ø586mm against yours ø603mm).

Where do they rub? My car has standard 185/70x13's on factory alloys but after rebuilding the front suspension one side was rubbing on the front wing under the wheel arch at the front where the panel rolls under, making a pretty awful noise. I think that the wing had been replaced at some time and was a bit out of position, although the shut lines look OK. I solved it by trimming the 'corner' off the bottom of the front wing (did both sides to keep them alike).

Because the castor angle wasn't equal one wheel sits further to the front while the other sits further to the back.
By the looks of it in your case one angle was probably more then 4° placing the wheel further to front. Just measure the position of your wheels in the front wing.

Can rather easily be rectified by loosening the brackets from ARB. This makes it possible to slide the ARB to left and to right, till your castor angles are the same at both sides. You might need a rubber hammer to persuade the ARB to move ...

They look good. Mine need it but will wait till paint job and new top so I don't lose my "unrestored" status.[:)]

So you're aiming at a "rat-look" TR7 [:D]

Very interesting Beans, I have been trying to find the reason for this for 2 years. As far as I could remember it didn't rub when I bought the car, but then I only drove it out of the barn onto a trailer before stripping bits. I will check it out.

<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">

Not rat-look exactly but a careful balance of looking good with a patina of parking lot dings, alloy curb bruises, cracked paint, water/acid rain marked paint, lightly scraped front deflector, small missing bits from decals, bent bit on LH grill but nothing that can be seen from 10 feet. Just enough so that if some car show official says "This car isn't original/unrestored" I can point out the above to overturn his objections. [:o)]
