Stainless steel exhaust............

Stainless steel exhaust............

As my old mild stel exhaust on the FHC has a hole, & is generally rusty, I am going to treat the car to a stainless system.

I plan to get a complete standard system, but retain the original manifold.

Obviously there are several suppliers to choose from, but before I part with the readies has anyone got any tips or pointers in what to look for, or indeed any good or bad experience with fitting or using a stainless system?

Biggest problem I encountered over the years where (freeflow) exhaust manifolds not fitting properly, so nothing to worry about in your case

Also the pipe going over the rear axle having the complete wrong shape. Got so fed up that I made something up from 2" stainless steel pipes. Just visible in this axle shot ...

Hi Tony,
I agree with Beans, never had a problem with standard stainlees exhaust on a four pot until i fitted a 4 branch,then could'nt stop the damm thing blowing [:(!]. In keeping standard manifold then should be ok, if memory serves me correctly i think the last one i installed was from a company called 'Falcon Exhaust' but that was a long time ago.

The one on my car came from tiger exhausts (think S&S supply them.) think it's based on a triumph tune design with the back box exiting perpendicular to the bumper, which looks really smart (I think so anyway.)

TR Tony,

I change my exhaust over from mild steel to stainless but notice the stainless ones I purchase didn't have the heat shields fitted to the boxes, so might be worth asking the supplier if the heat sheild is fitted or not.

The area which was the closest to the floor section was the middle box. Kept my underseal hot and felt the warmth.

Both my exhaust's centre boxes have no heat shield and I am still not cooked, despite the fact that I am sitting on top of them [:p]

We had a stainless steel exhaust including four branch manifold,supplied by S+S, to the 7 no problems with it as far as running is concerned, but the place where it was fitted had great difficulty getting the manifold right.
I have got a twin system including the manifolds on the v8 no problems with that either, the only thing is it does not sound as good as the single pipe s/s system it replaced.[;)]

A club member got a 4-2-1 tuned stainless headers, resonator and muffler from S+S. (cost more to ship than some people paid for their cars[B)]). I was impressed with it but was confounded how it was going to muffle anything as it was pretty staight through. Haven't heard it yet. He got it mounted by a Brit car garage. Didn't mention that they had any trouble with it but there is now a slight leak of coolant at the rear of head now. (Always do the work yourself if possible is my motto). He said it really transformed the car (with SU's and K&N's). If I was ever tempted to waiver from stock I would consider getting it.

That's probably the most trouble free route to fit a S/S exhaust.

Most problems appear to come from tubular manifolds and the resultant fettling and adjustments that have to be made further down the system.

I used Predator exhausts near Welwyn Garden City when I needed a replacement s/s exhaust manifold on my Honda VFR motorbike. It's a V4 so the pipes resemble a tuba / trombone. It's a really fiddly job so I got them to supply and fit. They did a really great job, even though the owner was very grumpy and should have placed himself in the sales prevention unit. They handle all sorts of cars as well.

I purchased my stainless exhaust from Robsport a couple of years ago,was easy to fit and fitted perfectly,all bends in the right places and all mountings lined up perfectly.I too kept the standard manifold as the sports manifold would not fit properly by the auto box.
Was definatly fit and forget.

Here is a picture of a TR8 exhaust. IIRC, these rear boxes are the standard sort and are easiest to fit. I had one like Bean's, in the past, but it kept hitting the rear towing eye.

Note that I have also fitted a TR8 system to my 16V - twin exhausts have a certain 'something' [8D]

Thanks very much everyone, & thanks for the pics. Sounds like a stock stainless system using the original manifold as planned is likely to be the way to go.

Your help is much appreciated.

By the way Theo, I spoke to Double S exhausts, as I live near them, & I know they have a good reputation. They told me they don't do TR7 systems any more, as they didn't have enough demand for them! They did have a single 4 branch manifold left for sale, but they didn't have the rest of the system, so no not any use to me. Shame.

When I swapped it from my first car to the current DHC it did that for the first 1000 miles or so. In between repositioned the complete exhaust system a little several times. And halfway last years 10 Countries Run it finally gave up rattling and started to behave. Since then no morerattling. I think it was due to the new mounting rubbers I used being to tight ...

Looking at other threads on here about exhaust systems, some say their 7s are too quiet for a sports car.

Ive got a stainless steel exhaust on mine and it sounds bloody horrible.
Its not so much of a rumble or a throaty growl, most people have said it sounds like a tractor.

I went to a meet a while ago and listened to some of the other 7s and none of them sounded like mine. Its not blowing and theres no holes im aware of. Anyone else got the same problem?

I have got a used stainless system going spare if you want to make me a silly offer.

Its for the standard manifold and if nothing else you could use it to try stuff out?

I am in Dursley, Gloucestershire.
