Siezed Speedo

I have been trying to sort out the speedo on my car. I couldn't get the cable to fit on the speedo head properly, when i tried the cable square drive in the end of the head by itself and attempted to turn the cable I found that it was stuck fast. Is this common? am I better off getting a replacement speedo or is it worth trying to fix the old one?

Did the speedometer work before you took the cable off? When I reinstalled my cable it went in with some difficulty. (Square cable in square hole only fits a few ways). The speedo had a jerky needle after that. This winter I had it off during my winter projects and noticed it was rounded somewhat so I added solder to the end and filed it square. I cleaned out the upper and lower cable sheaths and lubed with some special cable lube (quite expensive for a little tube). I've read you should use sewing machine oil or graphite. This looked like it was graphite in sewing machine oil. If it works I might try making my own next time. I haven't driven it yet to see if the needle is steady now. Are you sure you didn't jam it in some hoe that the cable is binding?

the speedo cable was disconnected when i bought the car and the tax disk hints that the car hasnt been used since 2000.

I would think a binding speedo would be quite rare. You can buy used and new speedo's off ebay. (I got a brand new complete gauge assembly off ebay with 80 mph Californian Speedo to match my original from UK of all places). I got it as a spare.

That being said, it wouldn't hurt to take it out and see what you can do. Never actually done it. Maybe someone on the forum has.

Have you checked if the cable is connected properly at the gearbox? One time, after doing some work down there and putting everything back together, it looked right, but the speedo didn't work. I had to reseat the cable to get it working again.

Just for referance, I took the speedo out yesterday and was able to free it off quite quickly without having to strip it at all, it all comes out quite easily.
