TR7 electronic ignition

There is a guy on ebay UK selling NOS Delco distributors for about 57 BP complete with amplifier that has Lucas label but has Delco insides. It's exact replacement for my 80 Spider but I don't need amplifier as the amp is integral in the square coil. For $188 delivered including taxes, shipping, duty it seemed like a good deal. UK folks apparently can put in their mechanical advance weights and springs to get their performance.

PS: I got it as a spare should my distributor go TU.

Why not just go with the one that Triumph built for the TR7 if you can find one?

Yes, that's what I had and it's just failed!

Incidentally the important part is to route the module box and mount it INSIDE THE CAR (a good place is under the drivers lower trim panel kick plate - no moisture here, and no screws required).

I would have liked to put my module inside the car but my distributor is at the other end of the engine bay. [:D] I didn't fancy cutting into the loom to do this.

Ok I have been out to the car tonight put new plugs in set the points (or at least tried)

Car backfires so loud but put up to high revs until hot the car can then idle but

Accelerate and backfires from the exhaust

I was having difficulty getting into the points to set them Because of the weights (in my head I think it is the points at fault)

I have been offered a new distributor from what we think is a 16v Sprint

Numbers are 41655 / 44D4 ( is this the sprint distributor right enough?)

And I have been told it could fit right in is this true?

Reason behind it is (A) better distributor (B) No dam weights at the top of the points

Also what do you think of the Luminition magnatron ignition

Yes, well all parts fail sooner or later. How long did you have that particular module? Mine came with the car and is still running, 1980 DHC, and works just fine. I expect sooner or later it will fail, as all parts do eventually, that doesn't make it a bad part, unless it fails after only a few thousand miles.

Calex59, I had it for about 6 years and 15,000 miles. It's not totally failed, it just cuts out periodically and unpredictably! At some point I'm going to take it apart to see if there's anything obvious like a dry/broken joint or a blown component. Just at the moment I'm glad to have the car running again and I guess I've got at least 2,000 miles or so before I need to touch the points so that should see me through the summer...

Was talking to Simon at Robsport today to be told that the sprint distributer

Does not fit in the standard 2.0L …[:(]

So looks like I am stuck with the weights at the top ...[:I]

Does a anybody know anything about a 123 distributer ( they do them for the MG)

But now do them for the triumph?

I will phone S + S and see what they say

Maybe Steve @ SandS will look in to the forum I know he does and give an opinion

It works as well as the optronic, but has the advantage of not needing any external (to the distibutor) gubbins. IIRC, you also just use the existing wiring - no extra 12V feed, etc. Phone them and check:

Sorry to rain on your parade but I think that the Lumenition Magnetronic kits & the 123 replacement distributors are only for vehicles originally fitted with Lucas dizzies.

The 123 is available for some Triumphs & is by all accounts very good. Trouble is we had the Delco dizzy[:(] You can get 123 for the Rover V8 engine 'cos of course it had a Lucas dizzy originally.

Are Pertronix ignitions available in the U.K? They list one for both TR7 distributors.

Neat thing about them is that there is no external module - just the pickup under the cap. Two wires to the coil and you're done.

We've had pretty good luck with them at the shop.

Could someone please inform the uninformed (who had a Lumenition in the previous V8 and have
an original Lucas Disco version in the present) what a "123 distributor" is?!?
As easy as 1-2-3 - or what?
