Dunno about that one Steve,i fitted Luminition to my auto.
Hardest bit is accessing the bolts to remove the dizzy! The rest is
easy. You'll never worry about the points again.Believe it or not,i
once did 250,000 miles in a Bedford rascal with one of these fitted
without a problem, back axle let me down in the end,but that as they
say,is another story!

See ya. Paul

Just had Lumination electronic ignition fitted on our 7 so far no problems not sure about the fitting as it was done by the garage in conjunction with some other work, so far seems great no problem with starting now.

I fitted an Aldon Ignitor (http://www.aldonauto.co.uk/shop/default.asp) system to my 2l. This consists of a small unit which fits inside the distributor in place of the points. It thus maintains a standard look if that matters to you. It senses the lobes on the cam passing the unit and thus fires the plugs. as you can probably tell I don't understand this stuff but I do know it works in a way the points never did! Car drives much better and there are no adjustments to be made every 1000 miles like there were with the points.

When I bought mine I purchased through a company called Retro Rockets (http://www.vintageperformance.com/retro ... riumph.htm) who are based in the US but deliver from a warehouse in the UK as they were cheaper. They also price in dollars so with the current exchange rates they are probably even cheaper now than when I pruchased a couple of years ago.

I think I am correct in saying that TrishaTR also has one of these systems fitted and first recommended it to me.

Usual disclaimers apply.

I have had my Lumination electronic ignition fitted on my car about a year ago and I have not had any problems from it to tell you the truth. I do remember that I changed the points as soon as I could as they were playing up something cronic.
I was attracted to the system as it is meant to increase fuel economy. My friemd done it for me and from what i saw the instructions were easy enough to follow with a plastic ring that went around the base of the dizzy. The hardest part was feeding the cables in and then connecting them to the box lol.

stevie_a, I think our dizzys are AC Delco, not Lucas (despite the frequent failure).

You need the Power Pack & Optical Switch kit which will be PMA60. You also need the Fitting Kit which is specific to the distributor - again pretty sure this is FK316.

You get full instructions, but if you find a second hand unit I have got an old leaflet showing the wiring.

I have Lumenition in my 2L & it's good - haven't had to touch it in 8,000 miles.

I've had Lumenition for years and it's been fit and forget[:)]. When I had points on my 2.0L they needed sorting every 4,000 miles or the engine went rough above 4,000 rpm.

I read somewhere that the optic sender / receiver needs a wipe with a clean rag every few years to prevent misfiring but I've never had that myself.

There's various electronic ignition packs on the market now but way back then it was either Lumenition or Pirana.

Make sure that the heatsink is mounted in a "cool" part of the engine bay well away from the exhaust manifold. Mine is on the inner wing behind the headlamp mountings.

Cheers,

Adam

Well I went back to points yesterday! I've had an American specification electronic distributor for about six years but it started failing in an intermittent manner. So now I'm back to the original distributor and points. The car's running fine now in that it runs all the time that I want it to, but I'm sure that it doesn't run quite as well as it did with the pointless distributor.

I fitted a Piranha unit to my TR7 (cheaper than the Luminition unit), eighteen years ago. It is similar to the Luminition but instead has a black plastic case for the module.

It was dead easy to fit. Simply a case of taking out the points and condenser, fitting the optical unit in their place (with the supplied new screw) and bolting onto the cam assembly the plastic fins that spin around inside passed the optical sensor. The hardest part is doing up the screws because of limited access, but there is just enough to comfortably tighten the small bolts under the rotor arm head.

That's all there is too it, but you can't come off the coil, you have to take the raw 12V from the ignition before the ballast resistor in the circuit. Not difficult. I would never go back (but if you wanted to it would be easy). There is little or no evidence it is fitted visually because I ran the red wire from the distributor under an existing pipe.

Incidentally the important part is to route the module box and mount it INSIDE THE CAR (a good place is under the drivers lower trim panel kick plate - no moisture here, and no screws required).

Job done, no more points, condensers or rough running. Just change the rotor arm and distributor cap as normal when required.

I did the same, best place for it!

I have a 1980 DHC that has electronic ignition, came that way from the factory, and recently I ordered a new distributor cap and rotor cap for it, got them no problem. I believe it is a Delco unit. Works great. Why not just go with the one that Triumph built for the TR7 if you can find one?

The one we had fitted to our 7 was £130 plus vat from S+S, £80 Phil certainly was a bargain!!!!
