Spent a luxurious day on my back (wish I had a pit). Whenever you do anything new on this car it always raises new questions:

1. I rebuilt the clutch slave cylinder as, since I did the master last year, the take up has been near the floor and there have been drips of what looked like brake fluid from the little hole in the rear of the bellhousing. However, while my slave cylinder looks the same as others I found it does not have the circlip in front of the piston (not even a groove for it). Actually, Haynes does not show the clip although the diagram looks the same as the BL manual which shows it. Is this normal? The cylinder is also slightly smaller than the 'hole' it goes in, ie although the bolts fit OK you can see a little of the hole in the backplate around the top and bottom of the cylinder. Also noticed a lot of oil and muck in the bellhousing so I think it may be the gearbox leaking from the front seal.

2. I replaced the soggy gearbox mount (5 speed box). But (there always is one), the large bolt in the centre is shimmed out by 6 washers on the under side (OK, the PO might have lost the bolt and used a longer one) AND 9 washers (about 20mm) on the topside between the plate over the mount and the gearbox. None of the manuals have a diagram of the mount but this seems a very unusual setup, is a spacer or something missing?

The muck and oil inside your bellhousing is more likely to come from a worn rear crank shaft seal.

As for the spacer, there should indeed be a solid distance piece (UKC1744) between 'box casing and upper restrictor plate (UKC1744).
From memory it should be approximately 1" in thickness. Found this picture in which it's clearly visible ...

Yes Alan, there should be a spacer, of about 2" diametwr, & 1"
thick, which sits on top of the mount. With out it, [or something
like you have] the gearbox will sit on the subframe, once the mount
starts to sag even a little.

When this happens the gearbox noise resonates through the car body,
& sounds like all the bearings in it have collapsed.

The spacer is shown in the Rimmer parts book, but not in my Leyland
manual. I'll bet it was an afterthought, addad when the mounts first
started to sag, but did not make it into the manuals, which were
all ready printed. It certainly looks like one.

Thanks, I was looking at the gearbox section in Rimmers cat, not mountings! I can see now that the washers are to replace the spacers. I do not have the plate under the mounting (as in Beans excellent photo) or the tie rod (UKC 2209 and 5670) - should these be fitted to an '81 DHC?

I thought the oil was from the g/b as the drips were thin and clearish (as brake fluid or ATF), and the 'front' of the flywheel is visible through a hole in the backplate behind the sump (should it be?) and is clean without a trace of oil.

Could this be why I've suddenly picked up a thrumming noise around 70mph? My rubber mount is from the original car, circa 1980 and definitely pre-V8 conversion. I originally thought low oil levels in rear axle and gearbox but they are fine. I drained and refilled the g/box. I was going to look at the rear axle bearings next weekend. Any takers?

Sorry Adam, I have a different gear box, & rear subframe set up, on
the 8, so I don't realy know. It shouldn't be too hard to check. You
just need somewhere you can get under the thing, with the wheels, &
weight in the normal road going position, & see if you have clearance.

If you aren't sure, slip a half inch extra spacer in there, & run
the engine.

I had to replace my mount because the rubber had turned to black tar from the oil on it unlike the the rest of the rubber things that had perished from dry rot. Were might the oil come from. Lots of places it seemed but it seemed to be dripping from the bell housing where it would drip onto cardboard on the floor. After washing under car with degreasers and power washing it seemed to be coming from where the clutch slave bolts to the bell housing. Couldn't be sure whether it was brake fluid mixed with oil or what. Turned out it was leaking from pressure release o ring and pump body to engine o ring and blowing back to the mount. Replaced those and no oil leaks yet. Dry floor.

Careful there F1. I think I read somewhere that making your Triumph
oil tight, was grounds for excommunication, or at least being banned
from Triumph forums.

F1, my mount was soggy from an oil soaking, even dripped of the bottom centre bolt (not a lot, just seemd to be a drip hanging there all the time. After removing the X-member it looked as if it was coming from the change rod where it enters the back of the gearbox. That looks like a much bigger job so will have to wait until the box has to come out. I also have the drip from the bellhousing as described above.
WRT to tie rod, from what I have read it was only used on the 4 speed box. Is this correct?

The tie rod (for automatics) or the restraint cable (manual) were only used for the North American market if I remember correctly. So you don't need that.
You do need the upper and lower restrictor plate (see JClays picture).

B.t.w. the gearbox mount in JClays picture is for the North American market, hence the bracket for the restraint cable.

Not to worry, everything is still nicely damp though not dripping so I won't get TOO cocky. Should still qualify me to get into any "all British" car shows without fear of disqualification.[:)]

Beans, I have the upper restrictor plate so need the lower one and the two proper spacers. Thanks for the confirmation.
What was it about the North Americans that they needed to tie the car together?
