Fuel sender question.

Hi All,

Has anybody at any stage of their TR7 rebuild ever tested the fuel sender unit ?
I have my tank out and I'm just about to refit it so checked the sender on ohms, but as I moved the float up I expected an increase in resistance, but it just jumped from 320 ohms to infinity! What should I expect to see ?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Dave

The sender should drop down to about 15ohms from memory when sender is in tank full position. It should also be reading something in-between those two figures at about middle of travel. It certainly should not go to infinity!!

Thanks for that Gary,

From what you say, it looks like its duff, I might as well change it while I have the access.
For something so important as to show the level of fuel in the tank, it seems such a weak design, in all the cars I've ever owned not one has had an accurate fuel display!!

did you have it connected to the right connector. if you look on the tank unit thier should be a T and W the t is the sender connector to the gauge.The W is for the waring light.

Good point, No I don't think I was measuring at the right connections, I'll look again tomorrow, I'll clean each one up to see which shows the T and W. I think I was measuring between them and from what you say I should be going between each one and earth.

I rechecked between T and earth, test meter on ohms, as Gary had said it starts at a low resistance with the float up and gradually increases as the float is lowered.
Test completed- Pass!
