4 speed gearbox with 5 speed clutch

4 speed gearbox with 5 speed clutch

I've decided that it's time my 4 speed FHC, that's been sitting on the drive for the last 18 months, is got back on the road. Primary investigations show that she's not suffered much since she was rested so there's not too much to do hopefully.

One of the reasons that she was left idle was that the engine needed some work, so as part of the plan I'm intending to transplant the good engine from my DHC (which is coming off the road for some work shortly and hopefully a V8 conversion).

The question I'm asking is do I have to swap the clutch to use the 4 speed box or is it OK to leave the 5 speed one in place.

I've searched the forum as I'm sure this has come up before but I couldn't find a definitive answer.

Parts manual states different pasts numbers for the clutch plate and cover (4 and 5 speed)
From experience I know that 5 speed and Dolly clutches can be swapped without a problem. Dolly and 4 speed TR7 transmissions are the same ....

For what it'e worth, the place I bought my clutch kit (for a 4-spd) from told me their supplier started making a single kit that works for both transmissions. Apparently they dropped the 4-spd part because it didn't stand up very well.

Hi Adam,

The 4 speed and 5 speed configurations don't mix with each other.

The rear axle, rear brakes, propshaft, clutch and bellhousing are all different so there's no chance of a mix 'n match.

A V8 conversion utilises the 5 speed setup which translates into a bigger shopping list if you're converting a 4 speed. Have a look at the Rimmer's site to check out the different setups / parts.

Either the 4 or 5 speed clutch will work. The 5 speed version is simply a heavier duty set up. Either will work though.
