New Tires

Postby MillerScottLite » 11 Mar 2008 22:00

I am thinking about fitting new 205/60 R13 to my stock steel rims. Has anyone fit this size tire and do they rub?

Thanks,

Scott

Scott, I have 205/65R13 tires, which are very close to what you plan
on, on stock alloys, on my 7. I have not had any problem with these
rubbing.

Scott , I've got BFG 205-60's on my factory rims, and have not had any problems with rubbing or such......other than the fact that they were a b***** to get on the stock steel wheels due to their width. [B)]
Friends of mine are also running Yokohama's and Dunlops without any troubles either (actually they convinced me to get 205's for mine)

I find the rear quarters are now filled out more with the extra rubber, and find the car steers and feels better on the road.....hopefully I still feel the same with my planed suspension upgrade this summer!!!!

Prolly the only problem you are going to have , would be finding some new tires in this size??????

It appears thru my smudged bifocals that the new tire is apprecibly shorter than the stock tire. I hope some consideration has been given to the change in actual speed versus the speedometer reading. I add this as I suspect the gasoline situation in all our countries will cause the authorities to clamp down severely and vigorously on those that exceed the posted speed limits, for the sake of fuel conservation. I would not be surprised to see reduced speed limits enacted, just as they were in 1974.

Is there any chance we on this web-site can turn the clock back to 1972 and start over again?

Its a few years back now, but I believe the difference in diameter
between the 185/70s & the 205/65s was just a few millimeters, &
something like one revolution in 9 kilomertes, [5+ miles].

Why are you using the 60s, do you want to lower it a bit, at the
same time, or do you just prefer the lower profile?
I rather like the biger bags on the 7, as it makes it
more "chuckable", & with out much horsepower, that's its fate,
getting chucked that is.

This got me wondering what size the Pirelli P77's are on my 7.
They are super tires, great handling and look quite wide and agressive. The one thing I don't like about them is that they look quite small in the wheelwells. (The car is not lowered)
When I checked I was surprised to find that they are "only" 175/70R13's. Go figure!

Scott, the speed difference on 205/60x 13s will be about + 1mph at 60 mph - odometer will read 226 miles over after 10000 miles!

Figures from Powerdog.

Thanks guy's. I found some Sumitomo HTR 200's for $ 47.00 each and 60 series because I thought the lower profile would look better and offer a bit more clearance. I used to run 205/60 R 13 on my BMW's with 13 inch rims so I figured I would stick with the same. I can't afford to get new (bigger rims) so this is my compromise.

Cars of the 70's (and 80's) had smaller tires. My TR7, Spitfires, and 1988 Toyota 4X4 are all on 13" tire of the same size. even my '91 Integra only had 14". With 15" mags on my Integra they look "huge" and it changes the handling characteristics quite a bit. (Less steering feed back and auto centering feel.) Cars of the last few years had bigger wheels/tires/discs. If your going for the "modern look" you put in bigger wheels on your TR7 but if you're going for the collector car/original/period look you keep them at 13". They will look small compared to todays cars and the teenboy-modified-Hondas but it depends on what look you're going for.

I have been considering a set of MGF 15" mags for everyday use and keeping the original 13" for shows. Front suspension/brakes and paint will come first though.

We are having great difficulty at the moment to get a set of 175x70x13 tyres for our 7 coupe let alone 205s which we were interested in getting, 14" and 15" wheels no problems at all, anybody know where you can get 13"s in the Wiltshire area?

I had same problem. Small tires are no longer common. There are a half dozen companies make them.
Go to this website and search for tire size, check out customer reviews, see what tire is sold in your area.

http://www.tirerack.com/

After turning down a set imported from France Michelins at $325 each, and a set of Dunlops that had the worst customer reviews I bought a set of Kumho's that were cheap and had decent reviews.

Kumho is the world's fastest growing tire company, won 2007 Race to Dakar Rally in single seater buggy class. (they're Korean).

Pirelli makes'em as well as Yokohama I believe.

I have 13s on the 7, & 15s on the 8.

I have just fitted a set of 185/70 13 Pirelli P400 on the 7, & they
are brilliant, quite the best tires I've had on it. I know its
easier to get good tires for the 15s, but I prefer the feel of the
13s on a road car.

The 8 will go round corners at least 15% faster than the 7, but for
normal driving its not as much fun. For my daily driver, I will
stick to 13s, as long as someone makes a decent tire for them.

I've just looked at mytyres.co.uk, and they have about 6 brands of 205/60 R13s available, from budget brands up to Vredesteins at £61 a corner. They supply only though, so you'll need to find somewhere to fit them.

Hi I emailed mytyres with a list of sizes ie:- 175 x 70 x 13,185 x 70 x 13, 205 x 70 x 13 and again same but 65 must admit I did not state 60's and they emailed back that they could not supply any of the sizes I requested.
We have now got a set of 175x70x13 supplied by Bathwick tyres who were very helpfull and evetually found some and ordered them in fitted them very carefully so as not to damage the nice new powder coating and laquer, excellent service.
Now all we have to do is get the car back from the paint shop and fit the wheels[^]
