I got a set from Rimmer about 5yrs ago. Part of a parts order I placed after I got the ins. check from the accident. Hope they are still good after laying about all this time. Can't recall how many times the lid has hit me in the head. I used to carry a yard stick to prop it open with. Now there's some Yankee enginering!

I've been thinking of going to the early solution on dads TR7V8 [with its weak struts and now luggage rack]
- but I need the bracket that goes into the body under the rain gutter... Anyone out there have a rusted
out hulk from an early TR7 that would be interested in drilling/cutting one loose for me?

I have bought an old boot stay from an early car as the tele dampers on my '81 are shot and they are rather expensive to replace.

Would someone with an early car be kind enough to measure from the inner edge of the rear gutter (boot lid hinge side) to the centre of the fixing nut. A photo would be great too if possible. The tappings in the boot lid are still provided but no lower bracket so I will have to fabricate something and want to get the distance right.

That's useful - now, I just need to find an early stay - after the b%$*$y boot lid dropped on my head yet again this afternoon! Is the stay unique to TR7 - or fitted to any other cars ? I suppose it's not thesame as the front stay - on the bonnet ?

bmc, they are very different, the boot one is much shorter and 'self releases' when you lift it after locking to go back down (if that makes any sense).

Hi,
If anyone reading this has a hydraulic strut on their trunk lid, could you please measure it open (and closed) and post it here? My TR7 doesn't have any sort of prop rod or strut, yet I have several from various cars I have parted out in the past. I'm hoping something might match.

I don't have a picture handy. the strut has an eye on each end, that a stud goes through, and is secured with a cotter or spring pin.

compressed, it's 12.5cm (almost exactly, but a bit shy of 5"). Extended it's 18.5cm ( a little more than 7.25").

Without my caliper, the cylinder is about 1.5cm in diameter.

Moss wants nearly $70! I'll use a piece of a hockey stick before I pay that kind of $$.

Aron, have you looked in the right place?

The struts are on the boot, [trunk] hinges, under the deck, infront
of the boot lid. As Tim indicates, they are very small, about as
small as you can get.

Tim, have you looked for independent strut specialist. We have 7 of
them in Brisbane, a one million people city. Most of them have a
mobile service, & will come to you, & pump your old ones up to
pressure, on the spot, for about $50 a pair, [US $45]. Its cheeper
if you take them to their shop.

I recently bought 2 new ones, for the 7, from one of these
specialists. $65 for the pair, when I picked them up from their shop.

Hello,
My 1980 DHC has no mechanism (except a golf club) for keeping the boot lid up. I see there are two types...a lift not unlike the bonnet's, and a pair of gas struts. It's not obvious to me which I should find. If the struts are compatible...what size?

The '80 takes two gas struts. VB has 'em in their catalogue

Hi the early type boot stay was simular to the bonnet stay type set up, the late type like youres is gas type boot stay one either side, usually retail anywhere from £25-35 a pair and at times on ebay there is a chap who sells them new for a but it now price of £32 a pair.

Be aware that the gas type struts are rechargeable.

I needed to replace mine about a year ago and I went for the gas ones. They did cost a little, but I thought it was worth it. With the boot stay like the bonnet one, I personally think it looks old and really tatty, when you can spend about £30 and have nice new looking gas ones. I got mine from a TR show, from Robsports, but they do go on ebay quite often.
It is a shame that there is not a gas one for the bonnet, that would be so much better. As you can tell I personally am a fan of only the gas ones.
