Need length of 5 speed transmission.

Postby 92rrrandall » 26 Feb 2008 20:35

Can someone measure the 5 speed transmission for me?? Not having any luck finding one locally out of a car.

The specific dimension that I am looking for is the length of the extension case on the LT177. The extention case is the alum housing which is mounted to the rear of the main case. I am not asking about the shifter remote. The extension case is mounted in between the main case and the shifter remote.

On the R380 the extention case is 4.6" long at the top. I need the length of the LT177 extension so I can compare.

Also note that on the R380 the shifter lever is 9.25" away from the mounting face of the remote. On the TR8 remote the center of the shifter lever is 8.69" away from the mounting face. The TR7 shifter remote is not the same as the TR8.

Using my rusty, trusty, tape measure and measuring it twice, I come up with right at 8 1/4".

It should be more like 3.75"

Mr Randall,

The length measured is the overall dimension of the bare aluminum case from the mounting flange to the end exclusive of the steel driveshaft flange.

3.75"? Nope, 8.25". Or, could it be you desire the measurement of only a part of the case and not it's overall length?

Mildred

Thanks for your help. That overall length on my R380 is 10 inches, and that is also helpful.

The dimension that I am looking for is at the top of the extension. It is the length between the mounting face of the extension to the mounting points for the shifter remote rubber bushings. I have reason to believe this is one of the differences between the two transmissions. On the newer R380 extention the shifter remote mounts 4.62" away from the face.

Trying to determine where my shifter lever will end up compared to the original position.

Randall,
if you contact me off list I'll give you all the data you'll ever need/want.

Remember I've been down that road already - and solved all the issues involved in fitting a RWD R380
into a Wedge. It's not just a matter of the gear lever ending up behind the hole in the body,
there's more to it than this. The lever issue was an easy fix - once the decision on how was taken...

(There's been an article of my tribulations in The TR Driver some time back,
if you have access to that magazine...)

Okay, how about 3 11/16", using my old vernier calipers. This is the distance from the mounting flange to the mounting points for the bushing mounts for the shifter extention.
