Electric Cooling Fan

Hi,
I am intending fitting an electric cooling fan to my 7, I have acquired a Mondeo fan and housing and plan to use a Pacet thermostat adaptor with a 22mm OE fan switch.
Can anyone tell me what is the inside diameter of the TR7 2l top hose is and also can anyone suggest what make of modern car will provide a suitable 22mm fan switch.

A guy in our club hooked up an electric fan in his Sprint Tr-7, the fan and I believe the swich both came out of a Dodge Neon.Not sure about the ID of the hose though...I'll try to get his email and post it for you here.

Sorry cant help with hose diameter someone will know for sure, but how about this for a controler i run one on the V8,can dial in your owm cut in temprature by the simple turn of a screw-

Your best bet (no problem with leaks etc) is to get a 22mm (the diameter of your new fan switch) thread let in to the side of the radiator. Any radiator specialist will do it. Far cheaper than buying a new Kenlowe fan sensor thingie - I sold all mine on ebay [:)]

To get the appropriate 22mm fan switch go to your friendly motor factors (mine is Motormania) and ask to see the rear of the fan switch catalogue (QH perhaps?). It will show diameter and temperature for all the switches in the catalogue.

Position it near the top hose as shown here for vehicles fitted with aircon:

You will, of course, use a generic 22mm threaded item rather than BL's hard to find kit.

If you do put a sensor pap in the rad, should it not be located near the outlet to control the return water temp to the engine?
Note that the radiator shown in the above diagram is for the early TR7, the later ones had both engine water connections on the offside. Not sure what vintage your is.

Most fan control switches are designed to sit in the hot tank.
If you want a two stage fan operation there's a neat SAAB 9000 thermo switch with two temperature
ranges for low speed/high speed operation... I fitted one to my new engine since there's no high temp
switch position in the hot wire plenum design, they only had that in the old US version flapper plenum...

jefremj, I think your 2nd word said it all (BL), but then I guess it depends on how you are controlling the circuit temp and the switch setting used. If you use the Saab 9k one as noted above, they are located on the return side near the rad outlet.

Not a bad idea to wire in a manual overide as well with a switch inside the car for those,'is that fan ever going to cut in' moments [;)]

Thanks to all that have responded.
Wedgie Kway that is exactly the setup I want to go with, can you tell me what doner car the fan sensor switch you have used came from?
BTW I see you have the same types of cars that I have, a TR7 fhc & a Spitfire MK3.

Neil does different sizes of these to fit different sizes of hose. It can be tapped to fit various sizes of sender which Neil also sells.

Hi Danny,

The fan is not from a donor car, but one which another enthusiast never got round to fitting. As far as I know you can pretty much take one off any car with a similar sized rad, it's just how you mount it that can be tricky. eBay might be a good start for an aftermarket one like mine (they have a universal fitting, with zip-ties that go through the rad core and have rubber washers to protect the matrix). Literally a 5 min job to fit, and maybe another 15 to wire up through a relay.
