AHHH Headlights!!!!

After fitting electronic ignition and tryin to get the timing right, the lights have gone mental!! They stay on, even when inside, pop out upa nd down, not in time, totally off. What the hells goin on?! [:(]

Pektron unit malfunction perhaps? Or the actual headlamp switch?

But given that you've just done a bit of electrical work, how about a bad earth?

Come on chaps any more suggestions from people with more idea than I?

Ummm yes i thought that. We disconnected the switch and they were still going like before and not turning off. Battery disconnected now. They do not rest when battery on at all, they never both are fully down at the same time, they stop kind of half up and half down. Bad earth maybe.

Definately clean the master headlight switch contacts, & the earths in the engine bay - always worth doing regardless!

If you have been playing around in the fusebox area when fitting your Lumenition, you may well have disturbed something in there.

The headlamp run/stop relays are attached to the fuse box assembly at each side, in later cars top left & top right as you look in the glovebox. Check that these connections have not been disturbed - could give symptoms like you describe. It is these relays in conjunction with the limit switches on the actual headlamp motors that cause the headlamp motors to stop their open/close cycle at the appropriate time.

The headlamps are fine - until they start to play up. Be methodical.

we disconnected the relays which appeared to be the motors. When disconnected, the lights popped right up together and down again and staying down and didn't move! But however the lights remain ON. [?][?][?]

Crikey! Not sure what has happened there.

There are no relays down by the headlights (unless someone had modded the light system in the past!), The big round things with a knob underneath are the motors, the smaller flat thing with wires coming out of it is the limit switch. The run/stop relays are(or should be) in the glovebox with the fuse unit.

There is also a single circuit breaker in the glove box to prevent the motors drawing excess current eg if they got stuck. The circuit breaker is connected to the run/stop relays. If the breaker is tripped that may explain the lights not moving, but it is self resetting so it should start to work again after a while (it is heat triggered).

Try reconnecting whatever you disconnected at the headlights then check all the connections to the relays in the glove box - wiggle them about a bit & make sure they are secure. If you have a later car check all the relays & electrical connections attached to the right hand side of the fuse box as you look at it, plus the top left which is one of the run/stop relays.

Lights have been fixed! It was an earth wire in the ignition on the dim and full beam switch i think. It's so loose lol. Well, yes i'm very pleased now! I am very tempted to go for a little drive to test out this new ignition, but it's illegal. I have run out of funds this month to get the car on the road in march. I can't afford the tax and insurance...damn. But hey shes running okay now and thanks for the help! Very chuffed. [:D]

Well done Orophin! Just reading through all this again I was really beginning to think it was the main headlight switch at fault. Glad it was something simple in the end.

Last week my own headlights decided they were going to pop up and down at different speeds. A liberal dose of WD40 all over the mechanisms underneath, activatet the headlights a few times, left them for a few days and now they appear to pop up and down together in perfect time.
