exhaust notes....................

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

exhaust notes....................

Postby gaz » 14 Jan 2008 07:09

Good morning guy's (well it is here anyway)...............
I took my recently, re-commisioned 7 to show a freind of mine..... he said nice, shame about the noise.............. i'm like, what noise.......... he's like, the lack of it....
he said its very quiet for a sports car in'it.......

Now this freind of mine owns an exhaust fitting garage he was trying to tell me about getting a nicer tone from my pipe was very easy....... so i'm like tell me more...... then i told him i don't want one of those fat boy racer cherry bomb things stuck on the back farting were ever i go.......
so he said no no no!...... he says he can custom make new exhaust with a full pipe and just one box to keep the emissions down and to keep the boy's in blue away!!!!
and i will end up with with a louder and deeper toned system...
I am totaly new to this game it all sounds a little to easy but at the same time feasable is he right or am i right to ????
i can see problems with:

using more fuel
my carbs will need setting up differently......
overheating???
will it affect power???
and what ever else???
What do you guy's think of it all

well it wouldnt be my cup of tea [:D]

i don`t know if you do highway driving but it seems to me that everytime you hit the throttle a bit more you get that *broap* sound...

personaly i use the standard exhaust system, maybe i'll switch in the future to an rvs system, but the are expensive.

Other thing is that a custom made exhaust is expensive to build and if you need spare parts they also need to be build, so that is a downside.

Hi Gaz,

I have to agree with your friend, the standard exhaust system is very quiet and not, in my opinion, in keeping with the sporty nature of the car. I have a large bore stainless system on mine made by Phoenix obtained via Moss coupled to a large bore stainless sports manifold from Rimmers. It has a lovely burble on idle and rasp on acceleration and im very pleased.

To answer your questions:

using more fuel - I have noticed no difference in fuel consumption at all, as the engine is allowed to breath more efficiently.

my carbs will need setting up differently...... yes, the best plan would be to help the way the car breaths in as well as out and replace the air box with K & N filters to complete the package. You will then need to run the richer 'BAL' grade metering needles in the carbs, obtainable everywhere and can be fitted in minutes. Tune and balance carbs as per normal.

overheating??? - the efficiency of removing hot gases from the engine is increased therefore making this LESS likely.

will it affect power??? - absolutley, thats half the point!!!

and what ever else???What do you guy's think of it all - personally speaking I think its an essential modification to me and an easy way of gaining a few more horses. A raspy exhaust note is great when blatting around the country lanes in summer and you will actively seek tunnels to drive through at full chat.[:D]

If building one from scratch insure that the primary tubes in the manifold are of equal length and have only very gradual and smooth contours. Stainless will last forever so thats a must if you are paying out for a custom build.

If you can why not try and twin exit system? After all the hangers are in place for the V8 system and it seems very effective on 4 cyl spitfires too.

My only word of warning relates to Triumphtune systems. John Clancy very kindly sent me the brochure for the Triumphtune manifold and exhaust made by Moss. Unfortunatley I had to wait 8 weeks for anyone to acknowledge my order at Moss and when it came, the exhaust system was as expected but the manifold was actually a Rimmers one but charged at Triumphtune prices. More frustrating for me given that I live 30 mins from Rimmers and could have collected it on day of order. I was eventually refunded the difference after I complained, but my advice would be to order direct from Rimmers or S and S Preparations and dont make the same mistake.

I have the original exhaust system on my car that came with it. In my opinion, it is too loud. I am wanting to get an early model down pipe and then get the original design SS exhaust system.

Driving 50 miles every day accross town at 70MPH really takes a toal on my ears!

Have fun, drive fast & safe, be kewl,

Straight through exhaust boxes give good power, especially on a tuned engine i.e. high lift cam, bigger valves, etc.
I would recommend at least Two boxes though to keep the noise down to a reasonable level. A longer and wider exhaust box (straight through) would also be quieter, room permitting of course.
Cheers

Hi,
Many moons ago (best part of 20 years!) one of the first mods i done to my FHC was fit a performace exhaust, from Rimmers i think,it had 2 boxes but a deeper tone than standad but not so noisy that you were temp deaf after a long journey, only rejetted after fitting K+Ns and 4 branch manifold,
Cheers John.

Nothing wrong with gettin'a little extra horses and noise via yer pipe! The amount of money i threw at Minispares center in southgate,
north london back in the eighties on cherry bombs and RC40's to
annoy the neighborhood in my cooper,s was dough well spent!
The 2 litre wedge does need a better exhaust note,so why not?

See ya. Paul

While the exhaust note can be a bit personal there are a few considerations.

You don't want the blat of a cherry bomb rice farter. I know of a Spitfire like that and it's just not right.

If the sound is too loud it will quickly become tiresome at constant drone on the highway.

My Thrush exhaust is just about right, while you can just hear it on acceleration and above 2500 rpm it isn't obtrusive on long drives. Probably not currently available as while it looks pretty new it must have be installed in the late 90's as it went into storage in 1999.

Unfortunately with a custom system you won't know what it will sound like until it's built. If you like the sound of a TR7 at a car show you could duplicate what the owner did. Other wise you pay your money and take your chances.

A friend got the S and S SS performance header/exhaust system ($500 shipping). It looks awfully straight through to me. Can't wait to hear it this summer.

Certainly I plan to eliminate the first silencer on my car - replace it with straight pipe. At the moment - there is virtually NO noise from the exhaust!

Interesting discussion, guys.

My FHC has it's original exhaust system, although the rear silencer was replaced by the PO but he used a standard spec Unipart item, so it is to all intents & purposes as it came from the factory.

It's only a matter of time before some part of it fails so I am thinking ahead about how to replace it. Stainless would seem to be the way to go, but there also seems to be quite a variety of systems out there. Ah well, deal with that when the time comes!

My FHC has tubular headers with a straight through pipe to a resonator at the rear. It sounds great outside the car but is all but unbearable on the inside. A center box is definately in the cards!

I replaced my standard system about two years ago with a SS system from (I think) Rimmers. It is twin box with tubular manifold and a slightly bigger bore, and I think it is about perfect. A bit more rasp on acceleration, but not droning at motorway speeds.

I have EXACTLY the same problem! I really dislike the sound of my car. Sounds so...bad and underpowered to me. Cud who answer my question: is it worth getting the 4 branch manifold, sports exhaust system, k+n filters and richer carb needles? I've heard the increase is only 6bhp, and my car has already has a standard stainless exhaust on it, so i may as well just get a cherrybomb backbox or something of that nature. But I'm still more over spending the cash and getting the full lot. [:p]

So...basically has anybody got any videos of the standard 2L engine with full exhaust set up? Or maybe just opinions? I don't really want my car to be chavvy. [V]

But in reply to your question: I would say if he claims to be able to build you a good custom exhaust system i would give it a go but if it costs more than the full stage 1 tuning kit from S+S preparations I wouldn't bother. Their stuff must be tried an tested and you get the full monty, though I don't know yet how good it is! [?]
