Starter motor

You do have to remove manifold on catalytic models (Californian ones for sure as they have a larger one I beleive.) The heat shield has only a couple of inches clearance and you can't take it off to get at the wire connections unless you drop the exhaust at the maifold connection. you have to undo all the hanger connections except for last one where you can leave it hanging as you move the front to under the engine. Just pipes or headers you should have enough room. (I'm currently making a heat shield based in the mirror image of a Chevy V8 one I got from Lordco that I'll return after I'm finished with it.) I'll post on my blog when done.

If the starter spins then the solenoid is working as it is the solenoid that engages the electric motor that spins the starter. Faiulure to turn the engine is either the bendix drive of the starter sticking and not throwing the cogs into the starter ring gear or the starter ring gear that is worn and thus the starter cannot engage Try turning the engibe slightly by hand if the stater spins, or bench test the bendix. I have had too many of these kind of symptoms on past cars - like a 1968 Jag 420 and a 1986 Opel Rekord that we affectionately nicknamed "The Heap" (bought in a hurry after I wrote off my Sierra V6).
