How rare is 1981 Oporto Red (Paint Code CMP) TR?

Postby mustangjohnny » 09 Jan 2008 17:32

While cleaning up my moms TR7 getting it ready for this spring, I noticed that the paint code was NOT Bordeaux Red as we have thought since 1982. So I pulled the window sticker from when the car was new and sure enough, it was Oporto Red. Whats up with this? I have never even seen this code on any Paint code lists.
Rare or what? Anyone else have one?

Triumph Oporto Red - CMP - TR7

Oporto Red was not a TR7 colour, however it was a Rover colour. The TR7/8 was made in the same place as the Rover 3500/SD1 (I read) so it is possible it got sprayed in the Rover colour. It might be a one off mistake or maybe they just decided to spray it that colour because that's what they had in the guns (who knows) they don't even know how many cars they made. The other possibility is the window sticker got typed up wrong getting mixed up with Rover info. What is the colour code on the door B pillar?

Now I thought that Oporto was used by Triumph for a short period - paint code CMP.

I think it is quite a rare colour but I am sure I have seen a few pictures of 7s in this colour.

I used to own the 12th from last FHC built, this was finished in Oporto red metallic. Aparantly this colour was introduced to the TR7/8 range at the same time as arran beige and the other rare late colours. It was a standard colour for the last 3 months of production.

My TR7 is a late 81 model and is also Oporto Red, so another non-standard one to add to the list. It needs to be resprayed next year & like the llok of the Mazda Lava Red that Mickey R has used

My assertion that Oporto red wasn't a TR7 colour came from it not being listed in the "Original Triumph TR7 & TR8" book by Bill Piggott. I assumed he had done some research on it. I know the book is not 100% correct and he himself says that record keeping was not Triumph's (BL's) strong suit. His assertion that the robin's egg blue colour of the oil filter cover for the N/A market might not be correct is wrong as mine was that colour (as well as FI intake hose clamps were that matching colour.)

I know Triumph used Oporto Red (CMP)on their Spitfires. Rover also used it (same colour code). If it was used only in last three months of production as Chris mentioned it may well of not even been listed as a colour in brochures.

I personally do like the "Lava Red" which is like a cherry (deep) red but wine coloured cars are not not to my taste.

When I owned the FHC AAC529X, I asked Heritage if it was possible to find out how many were painted in Oporto red. They could not tell me, however one of their employees went through the build sheets(at lunchtime) and found that 27 cars were painted in this colour, can't remember if it was for just FHC or included dropheads.
