Good tires?

Hi,

I might have to replace the tires on my TR7 this winter. It has Michelin MXR tires on at the moment which have been ok, but there is a lot of flex in the side walls. I have had a root around and it seems pretty difficult getting hold of good tires for the original factory alloys. So far I have found some pricey Dunlop track day tires, Goodyear GTR's and Yokohama S306's and AO21R's. I thinking at the moment that the AO21R's are probably going to be the best option. Does anyone have any experience of these or any other ideas for tire choice please?

Mat, I had the Yokohamas on the 7, with 13" wheels, & was happy with
them. They were damaged when a fuel line split, & they sat in pertol
for a fwe days. When I went to replace them, they were no longer
available in Oz.

I fretted about what to fit for a while, when an acquaintance in
the business suggested Pirelli P400 as the best road tyres for
13" wheels, & I could get 185s for the front, & 205s for the back.

I fitted them a couple of months & 3000 Km ago, & could not be
happier. They are much better than the Yokohamas, in all ways,
although I have no idea of wear rate yet.

What are they like?
To start with, the car is noticeably more dirrectionally stable.
It does not follow the road camber anywhere near as much.
The turn in is sharp.
The grip is great.
I can not make them squeal, even when I get a bit silly.
I love them.

I hope more members give their experience here, as its so hard to
know what will be any good on a 7.

Have Yokohama A032R (SS compound) on 't Kreng (205/50-R15). I know they are extreme (and expensive) but they nevertheless are great tyres with loads of grip on dry AND wet surfaces. Downside is that in combination with the car's set up it is quite nervous on cambered roads and on motorways.
Threadwear isn't that great off course with super soft tyres (just over 10.000 km) ... [}:)]

On the DHC I have Dunlop SP Sport 01 (195/55-R15) which are very decent allround tyres with good grip in wet and dry and good stability at higher speeds on motorways,

I had to replace my 13" Michelin tires and wanted to replace with same. I went to my tire store I usually deal with and they couldn't find that size in the catalogue. He phoned the distributor in Vancover and the guy said "We only bring that size in for the collector car guys. They're made in France and they are $325.00 each." Scrap that idea. I checked http://www.tirerack.com/ and there were a few manufacturers that still made that size. (Yokohama, Pirelli, Dunlop, Kumho) The Dunlops didn't have good customer reviews so I got Kumho's as they were inexpensive and had decent reviews and they were the "house tire" of my tire store. They seem OK to me. They won their class (Single Seat Buggy) in this years Dakar Rallye. They're the official tire of a pacific northwest stock car series. I don't know of their availability in Europe but they're the fastest growing tire company over here. (They're Korean).

Well this is fortunate as I am just thinking about tyres for my 7 now. They are helishly cracked pirelli P1000s (I think) and are 205/60/13s.

I haven't a clue what tyre to go for and am currently finding it difficult to source tyres in that size.

Out of interest what size did 7s come out of the factory with?

Cheers for that. Out of interest the tyre pressures stated in the lb/in2 column look mighty low! 1.7 bar is about 25psi, not 1.6 as stated...

rolling diameter of the 185/70/13 the speedo of the later 7s is
calibrated for, at least in Oz.
