Another newbie question.

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Another newbie question.

Postby spitfire1975 » 30 Oct 2007 19:09

Hi all,
I've just bought a 1981 DHC with 88K which has been well looked after.

However there is a whining type noise which sounds like its coming from the rear of the car, even when the car is coasting and not in gear it still makes the noise - any ideas? could this be wheel bearings or something to do with the diff?

Any suggestions welcome!

Cheers

Hi,
I would check the oil level in the diff.
I also heard an awful whining noise when I bought my TR7, but in my case it was my wife!!

Danny,

You need the appropriate type of oil for a whining diff. You could maybe try some cod liver oil on the wife? (please keep Moira away from your computer!)

I topped up my diff with some Pennzoil synthetic Gearlube 80-90w and it quieted down quite a bit.

I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember the old used
car dealer trick for noisy diffs. In the 60s, it could be hard to
hear the motor, above the howling of the diff, in many old cars.

The trick then was to put banana peels in the diff, which would
quieten them for about 1,000 miles or so.

When STP oil treatment products came on the market, in about 1963,
in Oz, all but the worst of them switched to that. Not only could
they no longer be accused of "dudding" the cars, they actually were
doing some good. It did a better job of quieting the diff as well.

If yours is still noisy, with the correct oil level, stick in some
STP, about 20% is good, it sure won't do any damage.
