We removed the sump off the TR8 in the car, when we were trying to find how coolant was getting into the oil. This was a good choice, as we found it was a timing cover gasket, so avoided pulling the heads off a recently built engine.
We supported the engine from a shed rafter, to avoid the engine crane legs getting in the way, lowered the subframe, & could easily remove the sump. Should work the same way on a 7. I have heard of people fitting new thrust bearings from below, but have not looked to see how hard it would be.
