New fog lights

Postby UKPhilTR7 » 12 Dec 2018 15:56

I need to replace the old fog lights on my TR.

I have replaced all the bulbs on the car (apart from headlights) to LED's and they look really good. So when replacing the fog, I thought of new LED replacements. I have seen the ones below, that look good. However, I was wondering if they are legal in the UK and will be OK for passing the MOT. Can anyone say if they are legal?

I used two high level brake lights, under the bumper, very slim, had them on since 2010 and always passed MOT.

Surely a 'R' reg does not need a rear foglamp and it would not be tested? They are only required after 1st April 1980. However, I don't think there is a problem as, with the age of the cars, EU markings and all that would not be relevant. It just has to work without flickering and have a tell tale in the car to show when it is on. It should also be more than 250mm from the ground, only work with dip/main beam or front fog lights and go off with the lights and not come back on until switched on again, but I think the last part does not count on older cars, only after 2013. With mine the MOT only seems to check that it works and the tell tale in the switch works (my TR7 is 1981).

Cool thanks for the update guys. From what I hear they will be fine and legal too, which is the main part. They will go where the old fog lights were, so that should be more than 250mm of the floor, as they are smaller than the originals. In saying that though, I will check it and make sure that the fabrication on the bracket does not bring them down too much.

My understanding is that whilst they would (probably) pass an MOT they are not legal.

No, I don't have one pre-production DHC … I have 2 !!

There are a few production DHC's that were made (& registered) pre fog-lamp rules but, in my opinion, if you drive them regularly (& thereby possibly going to encounter fog), a fog light is a good idea!

We have fog in winter here too (our Pacific Northwest weather is similar to coastal England) but have never required fog lights in any year. My '91 Integra had Integra front fog lights but the problem was when you had them on, every one coming towards you thought you had your quad high beams on and would flash their lights whereby you had to flash yours which turned them off for a second but gave the oncoming traffic a dose of high beams.

I still have not brought these ones yet as I want to make sure that they do not flash when I put the fog lights on, but they stay on continually.

I thought the flashing problem was for canbus driven systems sending pulses? I don't think the word was even invented when TR7's were born!
I have a high level brakelight on the roll bar connected to the lamp wiring in the boot which is a string of LED's which does not have a problem.

I was wondering if the led's would flash or not. Think it may be best to buy on, plug it in and see :D
