Hi Stevie,

I remember several old posts on this forum stating that they couldn't get the retainers to fit and sending them back to Rimmers for a refund.

These are my eBay messages questioning Simon at Robsport about the rear springs before I bought and fitted a whole car set.

New message to: numpty9
Hi, do the shortened rear springs require retainers? Thanks

Hi,
Only if you plan on being airborne for a large amount of time!
Otherwise have never know one fall out when on the ground.
Kind regards
Simon

So far no retainers fitted. Fitting the rear springs was a doddle as they just about slip in to place with the car on stands under the jacking points and the rear wheels just off the ground, shox fully extended. I reckon a pair of heavy duty cable ties at either end of spring would probably be more practical holding it in place if your rear goes airborne.

If the springs fall out the car is lowered far to much, or the rear dampers are to long

I don't disagree with you there. The rear dampers are Spax adjustable that I've had on the wedge for years and the lowered springs are those sold by Robsport which look the same as per Rimmers offering. Wedges were renowned in the press for having long rear suspension travel.........The Rimmers website specifies the use of their retaining kit for the lowered springs. It also has these additional notes.

"This kit is made up of Rover SD1 rear spring retainers, they were not fitted to the TR7/8 from the factory and so there will be some adapting to fit required. On the SD1 they fit vertically with the clip coming up the side and clamping over the spring. For TR7/8 implementation the clip comes from inside the of the spring and lays in the horizontal and drop over the spring. The plate inside of the spring will need to be drilled to suit."

That must be why no one on the forum could fit them.

The proper rear lowered springs were supplied by Triumphtune, but after its demise the knowledge disappeared. The springs were dual rate to take up the slack at full drop.

TriumphTune were great. I have Robsport supplied and installed uprated jobs on my car and there is the simple addition of a couple of cable ties on each to ensure that when I'm doing a Tony Pond impersonation they don't fall out. Twenty years on and the same springs are still in place.

Heavy Duty cable ties at each end of the rear spring it is then.

I previously had Triumphtune lowered dual rate springs all round. The front (yellow/ green) sagged considerably over 30 years, the car was hitting the much shorter than standard Triumph-tune bump stops on almost all potholes and speed bumps.

The dual rate springs are utter crap. If anyone wants a set i have a set coming off my car shortly.

So far I haven't had any problems with these dual rate springs on my DHC.
Actually for a "continental touring" car (my DHC) they are pretty good in my opinion.
These are 200 lbs/in and about 1 inch lowered TT copies supplied by Neil Revington 12 years ago,
and they have enough room for the bump stops to come into play under extreme driving conditions (so no binding) ...

But I partially have to agree with Steve, but for that they invented helper springs

Wondering what rate these springs are, that came from my '76 FHC (they give a pretty standard ride height) ...

The only Triumphtune fronts with dual rate were already very low! I went for the less lowered single rate and they are still OK 20 plus years later. IMO, this is as low as 'necessary' on a TR7/8:

Yours looks a fair bit lower than mine did on 195/50/15 tyres as per this photo

Changing to the new springs has brought the front up and the rear end down. It was no fun with the front touching the stops all the time.
