Tax free motoring

Having searched the forum, and the Government website I'm still none the wiser.

My 7 was registered on 15th May 1978, and so will be 40 soon, might even give it a run out to celebrate

Do I need to wait til next year to get tax free motoring, there is mention of it either being from Jan 1st or April 1st when it becomes eligible.

Any thoughts

Thanks guys, another 12 months wait til "free" motoring. Knowing my luck the Government will change the rules between then and now.

Yes, time left for them to move the goal posts to 50 years rather than a mere 40!

It may be worth your while obtaining a heritage certificate which certifies your cars build date, in the absence of this they go by the date of first registration for when it qualify's for "free motoring". In my case three of my 7's were built the previous year to their registration date and one was built two years prior to it's first registration! The downside is that it does cost in the region of £50.00 per certificate but im my case it is going to be well worth it!

The other acceptable date to DVLA is from Glass's Car Check Book - but that is not a help for ANY TR8s and not much use for some TR7s
for example in Dec 79 and Jan 80 it lists the VINs as no records!!

EWK 700T has just been given historic status, tax free motoring for the pre-production TR8 efi prototype ... this one was registered in 1978 but built in 1977

Government website is a waste a time ,and phoning them is even worse and each person you talk to will give you different info .my 7 was first reg 1/1/1978 ,they said it would by when it was built date , so that had to be 1977 which they disagreed ,so the argument went on with them ,so they wanted proof of build date ,so the heritage ,people wanted ,50 quid ,for that info ,what crap ,more money ,so i paid my Road tax anyway ,then i got a letter from the DVLA ,in june , WITH MY NEW V5 saying my car is now HISTORIC CLASS ,AND A REFUND FROM ,APRIL FIRST, WOULD THAT NO BURST YOUR HEAD
after all the people at the dvla gave coflicting info ,it would burst your head ,what you will need to do is pay up to may of next year and the DVLA will contact you , and after that
no more Road Tax
SO YOU WILL GET YOU LETTER NEXT YEAR 2019 ROUND ABOUT JULY

Out of general interest, how much is this tax anyways? We don't pay tax, just $48 I believe it is for licence plus insurance, Collector's insurance in my case which is much cheaper as I don't use it for school (all my schooling long done) or work (retired).

Tax is £255 py Or £267.75 for Total of 12 monthly installments by Direct Debit

Insurance is cheaper than an every day car ( i am £110 )

M.O.T is anywhere from £30 to £60 ( assuming it is a strait pass )
