Suspension Ball Joint Thread Size

Postby Sondar » 22 Dec 2017 10:34

Hi All,

Merry Christmas & all that...!

Back to important stuff (!), can anyone tell me the thread size and pitch for the control arm ball joint? I'm in the process of replacing the shocks and springs & have managed to lose the nuts for the ball joints. Nothing quite seems to fit, but at least if I know the correct thread, I should be able to sort it out.

Should be more careful and organised I know, but it's one of those jobs that started out as a weekend project but turned into several weeks due to warranty delays on the replacement shocks and then deciding to change spring rates...

Any help much appreciated, as usual!

What brand of shocks did you have warranty problems with?

According to the ROM, it should be 1/2" UNF (1/2"-20).

It was a GAZ shock - replaced under warranty after 18 months.

I thought it would be 1/2 inch UNF too, but apparently it isn't (I tried a brand new nut yesterday). Actually got an existing nut on there this morning. Not sure what size it is, but possibly an M12 125. I lifted the arm a bit higher with the trolley jack to give it more resistance to turning in the joint & it went on with a little resistance.

Should have thought of that earlier...

Pretty sure I have had different size nuts on different cars I have worked on. Why doesn't that surprise me?
Must go and check the spares in the garage now!
