Gearbox mounting.

Hi all.
Anyone got a photo of the gearbox mount in situ. I can't quite figure out why so much of the mount appears to be below the hole in the mounting cross member and wonder if it has dropped as I understand these mounts are prone to do.

I had the same problem. Have a look at the Rimmer's parts drawing online. I had a part in the wrong place. It shows how it should go back together

Thanks for that. I guess then that when it drops the lowest metal part shown in the photo stays in the same place and the rubber element perishes, breaks away and slides over it??

Certainly looks that way, I guessing the rear of the gearbox drops to as the mount slow melts and oozes eeewwwww :shock:

On top (between rubber mount and distance piece) sits a movement restriction plate.
This should prevent the box from dropping to much when the rubber tears out.

Hi. Sorry about all the questions! Why is so much of the mount evident below the mounting plate where to my (no doubt ill informed mind) it seems to serve no useful purpose? Would it be evident viewing the mount from the back of the car that the gearbox mounting has dropped or do I need to view the top of the mounting cross member? Is it common for the mount to fail and the gearbox to drop sufficiently to damage or fracture the exhaust or manifold? The mounting is over 30 years old so I guess it is probably knackered. Thanks.

As above, the mounting cannot drop a lot due to the arrangement with the plate above. If the rubber gets that soggy or fails it will just transmit more noise and vibration to the crossmember as it will have direct metal to metal contact. The bigger problem in a way is failure of the rubber mounts on the extension above the tailshaft which can let the extension drop down onto the prop UJ/CV joint.
