cooling problems AC, FI-engine and other issues

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Re: cooling problems AC, FI-engine and other issues

The first time I ran my current car down the road, at over 100 Km/H I started getting green coolant droplets out of the ventilation outlets.

Not needing heat in this area I simply bypassed the heater, but maintained the flow of coolant from the back of the head to the water pump. I think this is necessary for good cooling. I have noticed that the 8 has a water on off cock in the heater coolant circuit there, but the 7 doesn't. My guess is it requires constant flow from the back of the head.

Even when I fitted the air conditioning unit I left the hot water on bypass.

One thing we have often found with both the 7 & the 8 is that both can & often do get an airlock in the coolant circulation, particularly when filled from empty. As you have recently fitted new bits in the system, you may have one. Try removing the hose from the thermostat housing, & fill the system via that hose. Then reconnect it with it full of coolant. This often helps.

I have fitted the coolant reclaim system from an old Toyota Cressida, which keeps my coolant level about 2 inches higher in the header tank, & overcomes any airlock when filling.

Hi,
I allways thought that the cooling system is ventilating itself when opening he heating vents and the thermostat is opened while the engine is running on working temperature. I didn`t screw the tempsensor out, sitting in the thermostat housing, to ventilate the system because i had a little fear
that the thread of it will break.
Beans, your blog is very helpful. I want to try to remove the bottom air hoses to get a look inside the unit with a endoscope camera before dismantling the heater unit. Hope that it only will be the seal of the matrix core. And also i will dismantle the heating valve to repair it with a new seal if get one or a similar to adapt it. Last option when the matrix is reusable is to get it repaired by a specialist or otherwise find a similar one and adapt it. As people often says: "The hope dies at least" and i`m an optimist. I don`t give up !
Is it possible to remove the air hoses without lifting the dashbord ?

Hi all,
up to now i get the heater valve out of the car without removing the dashboard. I removed the left lower airpipe. Before that i drained the coolant water off . I also removed the front cover of the heater unit and the switches of it and the electric connections from the heater fan to get more space and getting closer to the tubes and valve. Then i drilled the 3 poprivets out from the bracket with an accudrill and a little pincers. It was rather difficult. To prevent getting pieces of the poprivets into the tubes or the fan motor i put some adhesive tape on it.
The closer look on the valve shows a bump on the connection from the clamp. The rubber hoses have worn out and the matrix looks a bit rusty. If i need new tubes for the heater i will take a hydraulik tube that is available in diameter 16x1,5mm.
